The Role of Woman in Ancient Roman

It is known the ancient Roman society was a typical Aristocratic society and women did not process any higher positions throughout the society. In this sense, this short essay takes Livy’s The History of Rome from its foundation as evidence to give a detailed analysis of the role of woman in ancient Roman. Then it portrays how women’s behavior in that age reflects the value of ancient Roman society.

One of the important roles that women in ancient Roman society play is child bearers. This means women took the responsibility of fertility and provided offspring for the next generation. This can be supported by the fact that Romulus, the king of Roman City, managed to rob and seize a large number of Sabine females and girls into Roman for the purpose of establishing new households. He allowed people from other ethnics to come into Roman and even regarded intermarriage with the neighboring countries was the most suitable way to get wives (Livy, 1965). All his practices were resulted from a lack of males at that time in Roman. Hence, in order to make Roman become prosperous and rich, there must be more females to give birth. In addition,      women were the center of a household and they were responsible for family tasks. Women at that time had to take care of the domestic chores and look after the children. For example, they had to run all kinds of households like spinning clothes. It is true that Lucretia was working hard at making lamplight on her spinning before tragedy happened. Although there were several maid servants in her house, she still needed to be engaged in domestic activities (Livy, 1965). Taking charge of the life at home was the major duty for women in Roman had to fulfill at that time. As both children bears and caretakers, females in Roman played an overwhelmingly significant role in the wellbeing of the entire household.

The ancient Roman society at large was established based on a patriarchal social system. The word “patriarchal” means “father” in Roman and as it indicates, the social structure was controlled by men who were regarded as the only leaders and decision-makers in the Roman society (Miles, 1995). Women normally were defined as caretakers who should take care of family issues. That means the ancient Roman society was featured with the social value that men had to take responsibility for public life and be courageous in fighting with enemies while women’s tasks included chastity and domestic affairs. Women in Roman were under the control of a male guardian. Before they got married, they were considered to be the property holdings of their fathers and be part of their husbands’ once married. After Lucretia were raped, the first one that she informed was her father and her husband. Her life had been subject to her father and her husband, thus when such tragedy happened, she would inform her guardians first (Livy, 1965). In addition, women’s charity was regarded as a significant element of female’s dignity at that moment. Females in Roman had to make a wow of chastity and if they ever broke this promise, they would be executed and get severe punishments. After Lucretia was raped by Sextus, she took her life without any hesitation in spite of the pleas from her family (Livy, 1965). She could never live with such a shame so in her mind it would be better to be executed since she broke her vow of chastity. It is also worth noting that males in Roman placed a high value on their home and family. Roman men showed respect and care towards their wives, which was quite different from other regions during that time (Miles, 1995). Under Romulus’s administration, married women could share all the fortunes of Roman and the privileges in the community and husbands generally expressed their affection and passionate love to their wives. Also, Collatinus, Lucretia’s husband, sought revenge from Sextus after his wife was raped.

Women in ancient roman mainly played the role of giving birth to children and taking charge of domestic affairs. In a patriarchal social structure, Roman women were under control of her guardians, father and husband. They regarded their chastity as one of the most important elements of being loyal to her family. Females could win kindness and respect from their husbands.
