As globalization penetrates, it is inevitable for us work with people from other countries and cultures. Unfamiliarity with other people’s cultures will result in misunderstanding between each other. Therefore, it is of great importance for us to learn others’ cultures and adjust our communication strategy. This communication plan will focus on cultures of people coming from the Asian country Japan in terms of work, punctuality, beliefs, gender, personal relationships, teams, communication preferences, negotiation, body language and writing options.
Japanese do take work and work rules serious. They are diligent, dependable and responsible working partners. Japanese employees strictly obey rules set by the company. Moreover, most of the Japanese keep aggressive in working and are willing to work overtime without payment. Japanese strongly emphasize the importance of time.On one hand, they always plan their own time strictly. On the other hand, they never waste others’ time. Few Japanese employees will be late when working because they regard being late as wasting the company’s time. They will never be late for meeting and appointments. They pursue rapid response whenever they come across emergency.
In terms of belief, Shinto and Buddhism are two main religions in Japan. In Japanese philosophy, they pursue bushido spirit, which focuses on loyalty, tolerance, brave, politeness, honesty, honor and so on. These personalities affect their behaviors in workplace. Their belief help them shape good habits in daily life, such as being on time and hard-working.
As for gender, though in the past, most of the Japanese hold the view that men should be the supporters of the families and women should complete the housework, more and more Japanese today advocate the equality of men and women. More women go outside for jobs.Thus more people begin to view the importance of women in workplaces.
Personal relationship is another aspect which should be emphasized when doing business with Japanese. Japanese businessmen attach high attention to credit and loyalty. Therefore, never cheat a Japanese businessman. Once a Japanese businessman decides to do business with someone, he will prefer a stable relationship rather than change business partner casually. Japanese also encourage teamwork and are well known for their community spirit. Their enterprises are characterized by family-run management. Thus, teamwork plays a significant role in their business. Once they form a team, it will exert dramatic power. However, individual initiative is also appreciated because it can make a team more powerful.
When doing business, Japanese prefer face-to-face conversation rather than writing a letter or phoning each other. Face-to-face conversation can better convey each other’s sincerity and further promote the business relationship. Therefore, we should catch all the possibilities to have a face-to-face communication once we decide to develop business relationship with Japanese businessmen. In the negotiation process, Japanese always hope that it can develop in a harmonious atmosphere. Though they are polite in the negotiation, they will employ the best strategy and win as many as profits they can for themselves. Given by their philosophical belief, even when they are conveying negative information, they maintain their politeness.
