The Japanese, as the war starter, was defeated by the allies in WWII. And the last straw which made that happen was the two nuclear bombardments in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The Japanese scientists, who focused on experiments and manufacturing of new weapons for the army, discovered that those weapons have become too deadly for the future generations (like the atomic bomb and other destructive ones), they began to rethink their deeds in the past, and turned their research towards civil uses; the politicos, however, have different ideas. Though Japan lost the war and was bombed by nuclear weapon, it had been a powerful empire which sought to unify the whole Asia and the Pacific World. The politicos accepted the fact of losing the war, but they never really consider themselves losers, so they try all they can to restore Japan’s power, hoping that they will re-become a superpower one day; for the filmmakers, especially the filmmakers of “Godzilla”, they view the post war period in the perspective of civilians. Although “Godzilla” is a film about destruction and catastrophe, but deep down inside it holds the banner of pacifism and anti-nuclear demands. The Japanese civilians, especially those who were hit by the atomic bombs, were scared of war and nuclear; and the monster Godzilla is an embodiment of both, it was a monster made by nuclear radiation. In various versions of Godzilla films, the Godzilla was either defeated by the human or befriended human. But they express one demand in common: no more wars, no more nuclear destructions.

The “recreational apocalypse” is a very common movie type which has been popular for years. It often imagines a certain kind of disaster, monster or alien that aims to destroy human civilization in some days of near future. The “recreational apocalypse” is actually a very subtle way to rethink and reconsider the wrong things we have done and the dark side of human nature in the creation of human civilization. Under extreme circumstances, human beings’ endless desires are exposed to everyone, which forces them to look at it directly. And often the reason those disasters, monsters or aliens’ invasion are triggered by human themselves, accidentally or purposefully. The filmmakers are actually saying that it is men themselves who create the apocalypse of their own society, and “Godzilla” is a vivid imagination of it. If men cannot correct their own mistakes, then the apocalypse would help them do so.
