In the essay The Egg and the Sperm: How Science Has Constructed a Romance Based on Stereotypical Male-Female Roles, it mentioned that nowadays, men are superior and more active still prevail. Although researches have already reviled that the relationship between sperm and egg is mutual, in the reading we could find that scientists always exaggerating the role sperm acts. “Egg is merely a large, yolk-filled sphere into which the sperm burrows to endow new life. (P750)” They are deeply affected by the stereotype of sexes, in which men are aggressive and energetic, while women passive and still. That reminds me of people have been advocating the gender equity for so many years and huge progresses have been made to improve it, but we still have to confront a society in which man can take more advantages over women. The conventional gender stereotype which means men with much more superiority is so deeply rooted in people’s heart that it influenced our behaviors subtly and unconsciously. In my opinion, this stereotype reflects the distinctions of two opposite sexes to some extent. In the quest for the equity, I believe that we should also attach great importance on the difference between men and women. Only by this way can everyone’s initiative be provoked and can those negative stereotypes lost much of their power to harm us.

According to the reading The Egg and the Sperm, it shows that in scientific field even most rigorous scientists fail to escape from the stereotype of sex. Take the process of fertilization for example, we are know that it happens when a sperm meet an egg, but what we do not know is which parts, sperm or egg, is the more active parts. People believe that men’s protrusive penises, especially when they got erected, represent the aggression and power. On the contrary, women’s vaginas represent the motionlessness and passivity. Inherent concept of men’s superiority has unconsciously influenced the scientists’ depiction on the relations of sperm and eggs during fertilization. Even when they realized the active role of eggs, they are still reluctant to change their expressions.

Indubitably, men and women are physiologically different. It is precisely this very difference that leading progress of our society. Therefore, we are not pursuing full equality, but pursuing the society in which not only basic equity such as women’s rights to vote can be guaranteed but also peculiarity of sexes can be carried forward. For example, motherhood is a woman's nature, and at the same time, experience tells us that children are more intended to live with the women. Thus women being as babysitters, preschools would be a more sensible choice. Similarly, because men secrete more androgens than women, they would be more robust and explosive. Therefore, men will be more suitable to engage in works like being porters, polices and so on. If we emphasize too much on full equality, our society would be in a total mess. Just to imagine the following scenario: kids might get hurt, simply because our kindergarten uncles wanted to hug them, or children get pricked by their hard beard. Thieves will swaggers, stealing things without any fears because no policewomen can catch them.

In a nut shell, despite the fact that we are suffering from the stereotype that women are inferior, and despite we are desperately to seek equity for women, we should always keep it in mind that building a society with relative equity is a sensible choice.
