Video summary: (18)Stories in your head - instant buzz

The video begins with a story of a Vietnam veteran Dennis. How can the terror Dennis experienced in Vietnam have such long-lasting effects on his brain? Then the video tells the brain story—in the heat of the moment. This video focuses on the complicated origins of human emotion. Most emotions are closely connected with brain areas and the chemical changes of brain.

Thus I divided this video into five parts.

Part one is the introduction of six basic human emotions. And we can also know the famous scientist Susan Greenfield.

Part two is an experiment which is taken to find the origin of disgust.

Part three is the story of Vietnam veteran Dennis to find the influencing factor of fear.

Part four is where happiness comes from.

And the part five is the summary of the topic.

As we all know, human have six basic facial expressions—happiness, sadness, disgust, surprise, anger and fear. The first part of the video tells us the truth. And how these expressions can be generated by our brain? I don’t know. But the video can tell us. In this part, we can also see Susan Greenfield. Professor Greenfield explores the complicated origins of human emotions. She believes the answer must lie in the biochemistry of the brain.

In the second part, Professor Paul spent much of his time attempting to revolt people. During the experiment, Professor Paul took different kinds of food to test the reaction of children. Most food are not delicious even terrible. Of course, most children are disgusted with them and refused to eat. Professor Greenfield believes that this particular emotion is directly linked to quite basic sensations in the mouth and the stomach. But disgust can also be learnt. During the experiment, a young woman was tested by an apple juice which had an insect floating in it. There is no doubt that she refused it. However, some children were quite happy to drink it when the insect had been removed. It’s so interesting that I can learn the origin of disgust.

In the third part, Dennis’ story told us the origin of fear. Vietnam veteran Dennis has symptoms of stress syndrome. He is easy to get jumpy and easily startled. In addition, he has intrusive memories of his war experiences. And what has changed in Dennis’ brain to leave himself fear? In order to find the reason why he was in trouble, he was asked to take an MRI scan. In the end, the result indicates that the fear which Dennis experienced seems to have physically altered the structure of his brain. So he is easy to get in trouble.

In the fourth part, we can know the origin of other emotions such as happiness. There is no doubt that drugs can affect our feelings. They can bring us joy or happiness. But don’t be addicted to drugs such as cocaine and heroin. Besides, there are a large amount of things that can make us happy such as gamble, wedding, money and so on.

Through the video, I believe that not only emotions are governed by physical areas of the brain, but also chemical change may have an important influence on our emotions. And Professor Greenfield believes it may be something far more subtle and mysterious. But she is convinced that human will be able to find the final answer in this century.
