Identity Shaping in the Workplace

Identity shaping is always an important part in people’s life in that it can help people identify themselves so as to better plan their own life. There is no doubt that identity shaping will be laid high emphasis on by the great majority of people while many of them can still not gain correct awareness toward their own identity. At the same time, many scholars have even written about identity shaping after researching about it over years. In their essays, “Blue-Collar Brilliance” and “Dig Deep: Beyond Lean In”, Mike Rose and Bell Hooks, respectively, address the efforts-consuming process of identity shaping in the workplace and different people will shape distinct identity at last. By comparing and contrasting these two texts, varying elements can be gained about how the workplace takes effect in identity shaping and what efforts people have to make in order to smoothly shape their identity finally.

As both authors explore identity shaping in the workplace, these two authors believe that identity shaping can take place in the workplace and the value of workplace in people’s identity shaping should be valued. It can successfully arouse the attention of people toward shaping their identity in the workplace so that they won’t neglect the functions of workplace for their own identity shaping. But what is different is that Mike Rose emphasizes more on the acquisition of intelligence, skills and wisdom from the social and technological dynamics of their workplace through problem solving, proper planning and social interactions. And Rose successfully delivers his opinion to the audience by describing what he learned as a child observing how his mother was shaping her identity as a waitress in the coffee and family shops. However, Bell Hooks focuses more on the necessity for people to have the ambition to lean in to their career and run the world. From the perspective of Hooks, people have the ability to change the world, during which people can as well shape their own identity. The differences between these two authors can enable us to understand that people should firstly have the ambition and courage to lean in to the career so that they can obtain necessary intelligence, skills and wisdom from the social and technological dynamics of their workplace through problem solving, proper planning and social interactions later on in the workplace.

In the point of view of Rose, it is irrational to judge people according to their level of education and people should be given the recognition they deserve regardless of how much education they have received. He is not in favor of the statement that “Intelligence is closely associated with formal education” (Mike. 2009) and he puts forward that formal education can not always be used to measure the level of intelligence of a person. Or maybe it can be put in another way that intelligence has to be valued no matter where it is learned, from education or not. Therefore workplace can be regarded as an effective institution for people to learn and improve their intelligence step by step and education is not the only way for people to nurture higher intelligence. So a fair knowledge can be obtained that Rose has actually compared the intelligence of people that have high level of education with those that have low level of education, indicating that workplace can also help people improve their intelligence apart from education.

While the contrast of Hooks mainly concentrates on the differences of men and women, which can be predicted from two expressions in the article that “men still run the world” (Bell. 2013) and “the world needs women to change it” (Bell. 2013). Via such contrast, Hooks would like to illustrate that there should be no bias toward women and women should be given equal rights and freedom as men. And that is why feminism exists everywhere throughout the whole paper of Hooks and feminism is set to end sexism, sexist exploitation and oppression. What Hooks desire is that all the women can equip themselves well enough to step into the career world so that they can get themselves rid of a series of detrimental influences from sexism. And that is right why Hooks explains that “the ‘lean in’ woman is never given a racial identity” (Bell. 2013), from which it can be found that women of all racial identities have the rights for “lean in”. Moreover, the process of women’s lean into the workplace can actually be seen as the one for those women to shape their identity and they do not have to regard themselves as one that is inferior to men any more. Namely, the identity shaping of women is more of the focus in the article of Hooks. In this sense, the identity shaping of blue collar workers accounts for a larger part in Rose’s work. The differences of comparison of those two authors allow the audience to understand that each and every person will have their own exclusive identity and it is different from one another more or less.

Besides, Rose has as well elaborated on the requirements of both body and brain for work so as to well suggest that workplace can really train people’s intelligence, leading to people’s learning knowledge and intuition from within. Detailed speaking, those blue collar workers have to work smart and make her every move count if they would like to be effective at physical work. The work for those blue collar workers are not simply mindless tasks but tasks that call for intelligence and skills, suggesting that those workers have to make efforts in various ways for the work. In addition, they have to become adept at reading social cues and managing feelings so that they can be competent for their work. Obviously, when blue collar workers get themselves familiar with and more and more proficient in their work, they can shape their own identity in the meantime.

The same as Rose, Hooks also make judgments about the nature of women and work and he proposes that workplace is where women can acquire wealth even if they have to confront various obstacles as other women inside the workforce. Here work is a feasible way for people to gain wealth and achieve personal improvement and it is right like the intelligence and intuition that those blue collar workers can gain from work mentioned by Rose. Hook further explains that efforts have to be made by those women to conquer those confronting obstacles if they would like to prove their own strength and fight for equal rights and freedom as men. Similarly, efforts paid to conquer a series of obstacles can be compared to the efforts made by those blue collar workers to get themselves familiar with their physical work stated by Rose. Based on this comparison, we can easily imagine that the process of identity shaping is an efforts-consuming one.

From both the articles of both Mike Rose and Bell Hooks, a natural conclusion can be drawn that identity shaping, an efforts-consuming process, can really happen in the workplace and different people are bound to shape different identity in the end. Though identity shaping may be a pains-taking experience for people, it should still be undergone when taking the great significance of identity into consideration. Only in this way can a large number of people really know clearly as for how to better plan their own life in the due time.
