As an influential social system in the 21th century, McDonald has become a signal of favor for eaters as well as a popular project of research on food and health. Actually, the successful operation and expansion of McDonald across the world was first taken as a paradigm of the economic patterns in the catering industry. When the concept of “McDonaldization” was proposed in his book “The McDonaldization of Society”, the sociologist George Ritzer summarized it as “the process by which the principles of the fast-food restaurant are coming to dominate more and more sectors of American society as well as of the rest of the world.” [1] The four primary components of McDonaldization (i.e. efficiency, calculability, predictability and control) were based on Max Weber’s sociologic idea of rationalization, in which it is held that “Instead of human behavior being motivated by customs and traditions, rationalization leads to behaviors that were guided by reason and practicality.“ [2] By addressing this, I think it necessary for any boycott essays against McDonald out of health reasons to affirm the cost-efficient benefits of the Golden Arches to eaters.

However, in the essay “Don’t Blame the Eater”, the author seems to have not enough consideration for the great convenience brought by McDonald to those with fast food demands. Instead, his insipid presence of “more than 13,000 McDonald’s restaurants down any thoroughfare in America” has the potential to alienate rather than persuade the audience.

In terms of the good use of emotional appeal, the author is so genuine as to start from his childhood memory. He recalled the youth experience of frequently having lunch and dinner in McDonald and the like, and accordingly verified the consequence of fast food in helping gaining weight. The opening words indicate that the target reader is teenagers, especially young and less rich people who just share the similar financial conditions and age factor with the author. Naturally, in the next several paragraphs, the author attempts to label McDonald food as an inducement to lifetime obesity.

However, his stance of the correlation between McDonald and health problems is far from persuasive. In his analysis of the social phenomena of the rising rate of Type 2 diabetes and the large amount of money spent to treat diabetes, the author fails to statistically explain to readers whether McDonald eaters have higher morbidity of Type 2 diabetes, or whether McDonald food is the main cause to these phenomena. As what Max Weber said, “for any outcome there can be multiple causes” [3]. As far as I know, although researchers have not fully figured out the reasons why some people develop type 2 diabetes, there are at least seven influencing factors that have already been confirmed, i.e. weight, fat distribution, inactivity, family history, race, age and prediabetes. Therefore, actually the author’s citation of the occurrence rate of type 2 diabetes is kind of far-fetched. His individual case of weight increment may not well apply to general studies.

In terms of the calorie label, the author minutely showcased how a company’s website misleads the intended product buyers with representative statistics. Calorie is a clever point to argue against the calculability of McDonaldization, which refers to the notion that quantity equals quality, and that a plenty of products delivered to the customer in a short amount of time is the same as a high quality product. With such high calorie, the McDonald food diminishes the importance of health food in favor of business interests. What is more, the domestication of food types and flavors of McDonald in different countries (such as pickle hamburgers in South Korea) helps maintains its productivity, albeit to a limited degree. At least for now, the fast food is still incapable of replacing other food with respect to nutrients and product diversification, no matter how hard fast food restaurants try.

The use of macro perspective in the last several parts of the essay supplements the micro perspective of individual health conditions, as the author encourages the supporters of the state governments to consider the direct line between advertising fee of McDonald and their own swelling health care costs. There are many voices in what really stands in the way of cutting health care costs. It is necessary to divide the obstacles into smaller ones and handle them one by one. In this way, instead of a professional and in-depth analytical paper, the essay seems to be general and provocative enough to reach the audiences with a multiply of thought-provoking points.

Another point worthy of discussing is the ethos that the essay is placed into. The social context has converted from praises of McDonaldization to the mixing comment on McDonaldization and De-McDonaldization. Gradually, people lay more importance on health issues and the pleasure of the unpredictability of product and service. Fast-food chain has been expanded to other links of the food chain, with the arising of new-type restaurants with the low-cost provision “half-prepared” fresh and nutritious food. McDonald has no more been irreplaceable in the catering industry, which is just as what the author wishes in the essay: “let the deep-fried chips fall where they may”.

Finally, by reading through the paper, I find that the author ignores the cultural roles of McDonald, especially when the target reader is teenagers. For the youth, McDonald is more than a restaurant with efficient service and cheap food. It is indeed a good place for them to do group discussion or homework, or to have a relaxing chat over hamburger or French fries. McDonald grows with the eaters, witnessing the progress made by them.

All in all, although I agree with the calorie-related opinion to a point, his research into the health problems represented by Type 2 diabetes cannot convince me. With a distinctive viewpoint, the author constructs his argument in a generally-approaching rather than deeply-analyzed manner. I recommend that his arguments should be further developed.
