Rhapsody

The case about Rhapsody suggested that the product have succeed before and now, the managers are wondering how to further grow this business in terms of collaborating partners, gaining more customers, and how to differentiate from its competitors.

One of the reasons that contributed to Rhapsody’s success over its competitors is that it provided a comprehensive music for its users. For example, it would offer the users all of the songs in an album of a singer and all of the albums sang by the singer. In addition, it would recommend you some related singers and provide their songs to the listeners. It was appealing because listeners could easily find songs that they loved and could listen to whatever song that is published. They do not have constraints over to which songs can be downloaded and which songs are restricted with this unlimited access of songs provided by Rhapsody.

One of the reasons why listeners were reluctant to adopt online streaming music services is because of their fear of penalties for violating copyright laws. In the USA, the law regarding copyright laws is very strict and people could be sent to court if found downloading massive amounts of free online materials, including music, videos, papers, and etc. So, when the customers are not sure whether their action is legal or not, they might chose the safer method---to not to download at all.

Some of the key factors influencing people to adopt the streaming music include whether the price is reasonable, whether it is convenient to find and download the music, whether the downloading and loading speed is fast, and etc. If Rhapsody can cater to the customers and be designed in such a way that the users are satisfied with all of the aspects stated above, then Rhapsody will have a higher chance of gaining more customers.

Rhapsody could adopt the following strategies to accelerate its growth. They could collaborate with channel partners such as because as stated in the case, Rhapsody already have four different distribution and promotional partners and they have all proved to be successful. My recommendation is that Rhapsody collaborate with whatever channel that uses the most updated high-techs because the future trend will be high-tech. for example, one technology that is very popular in 2016 is the VR/AR and many firms are making and selling those kinds of devices. If Rhapsody can collaborate with them, they can extend their music into MTV and let the customers play the MTV on the VR devices. Another potential partner will be smart phones, Android phones in particular. Their competitor iTunes have Apple to back them up. So why not collaborating with other Android phones and make a Rhapsody app that is a build-in app on every Android phone? Then the customers who uses Android phones will be forced to used Rhapsody as their default app to listen and download music to their phones. Although the iPhone dominates the market in the USA, there are many countries with high populations that uses Android phones more such as China and India. Rhapsody can expand internationally in those countries by collaborating with Android phones.

They could race to acquire new subscribers by discounting aggressively because as stated in the case, Exhibit 4, there are many competitors such as iTunes, BuyMusic, MusicMatch, Napster, and Wal-Mart. As the executives have recognized, the online music arena would soon be glutted with entrants. (Eisenmann and Carpenter ,7) When customers are accustomed to using one device, they are reluctant to change to another because the learning curve could be high. So the one who wins the majority of the customers in the first place usually wins. To combat with its competitors, some discounts in the beginning is necessary according to my view. Look at some successful cases in the past such as Uber, where they offered coupons to the users in the first place to win the customers. Even though they are not profiting much even until now, they have nevertheless succeeded because most people in most countries use this app. After Rhapsody wins many customers, they can acquire smaller competitors and grow bigger and bigger in size. However, if they want to save some money now and are reluctant to offer discounts to attract customers, they might be acquired by bigger competitors in the near future.
