1. Introduction

The education industry consists of various public and private institutions whose primary goal is to provide knowledge, training and guidance to children or students (Blainey, 2004). Generally, schools and instructors play essential roles in education because they help students to learn knowledge or be trained through lecture, discussion, experiment, writing and exams and so on (Blainey, 2004). However, today some of instructors and schools’ roles or functions could be replaced by innovative technologies. For example, facial recognition, Google Docs and massive open online courses (MOOCs) are three important technologies which raise a revolution in education.

Facial recognition is a technology which could verify or identify people from image or video source (Buolamwini and Gebru, 2018). Based on a form of computer application, facial recognition now has been widely applied in mobile phones, governmental security systems and commercial activities to quickly identify the specific person and track his or her behaviors, movement or even emotions (Buolamwini and Gebru, 2018). In education, facial recognition could be used to tract students, staff and school visitors to ensure the school security. Google Docs is a cloud-computing-based word process technology which allows users to edit and process word-based files with others online and in real-time (Marshall, 2006). Provided by Google Inc., Google Docs creates an innovative teaching and interactive modes that enable real-time collaboration and communication. MOOCs is a technology which enables unlimited students to access classes online and promotes interaction, in-time feedback and practices through the systems (Adamopoulos, 2013). As a technology which greatly increases the efficiency of teaching and instruction, MOOCs now have been widely applied to universities or community educational institutions.

This report examines the impacts of the three technologies, facial recognition, Google Docs and MOOCs on education industry. Focusing on Federation University, this report also explores the opportunities and challenges brought by the new technologies.

2. Business justification for the use of technologies

In the past five years, the three technologies enjoy rapid development in education sectors. First of all, facial recognition has been applied to education to help teachers and schools to accurately recognize staff, students and visitors’ behaviors. The main purpose of facial recognition is to improve school safety through real-time guest check-in and campus monitoring. In some exams, facial recognition could also be applied to verify participants’ identities to avoid cheating behaviors (Locker, 2018). Google Docs now become a necessary study tool for both teachers and students, especially in team-based paper writing or discussion. According to Lardinois (2017), by 2016, Google Docs had over 70 million users across the world, and now over half of students in the UK used Google Docs in their study. Also, an increasing number of teachers and professors are using Google Docs to encourage interaction and collaborations among students (Lardinois, 2017). MOOCs now are widely applied to various educational institutions. For example, in 2013, Stanford University developed its own MOOCs system “Stanford Online” to provide online courses for both students and outside registered users (“Sandford Online”, 2016). Thus, MOOCs now are not only a tool for education, but also a platform used for commercial activities such as paid skills training or paid lectures for non-students. Because of the development of MOOCs, the number of students who take distance courses increased by 2% annually in the past five years (“Online Course”, 2018).

Federation University is a public educational institution based in Australia, and it has also been influenced by the three technologies. For example, currently, most students of the University would do their group-based homework on Google Docs, and a majority of professors of the University will share the teaching materials on Google Docs. MOOCs are an important part of the university’s teaching activities because every student will earn the credits from online courses of the university’s MOOC system. Moreover, an increasing number of students prefer MOOCs because such technology gives students opportunities to design their study plan. Since MOOCs do not require students to go to the classrooms in specific time, students can flexibly study anytime anywhere. Facial recognition now has not been applied to Federation University, while it can significantly improve the security of the campus and effectively strengthen the academic integrity. For example, based on facial recognition technology, IP-based cameras could accurately monitor people who enter the campus and track their behaviors. Once the risky behaviors, such as shooting or firing, were monitored by the cameras, the alarm will sound to prevent crimes from happening (Locker, 2018). Also, when students taking exams, the IP-based cameras will accurately confirm participants’ identities and monitor their cheating behaviors.

By applying the three technologies to Federation University, five organizational advantages could be achieved. Firstly, Google Docs and MOOCs could help the University to gain return on investment. Both Google Docs and MOOCs could improve the teaching efficiency and save times of professors and teachers. Once the traditional classroom setting or face-to-face communication are replaced by the two technologies, the utilization efficiency of the university’s educational resources will be maximized. Thus, the costs on teachers’ salaries, hiring professors and assistants, and building new classrooms could be saved. Moreover, MOOCs could attract outside people to pay for the courses they are interested in so as to earn profits from this new educational mode. Secondly, all the three technology provide customer convenience. For example, Google Docs and MOOCs enable students to access classes and materials anytime and anywhere. Facial recognition enables students and staff enter the campus freely without security check. Thirdly, the three technologies meet demands from customers because more students demand flexible courses online to avoid commuting, and they require University to strengthen security to decrease the risks of crimes such as school shooting or terrorist attacks. Next, the technologies increase competitive advantages of Federation University because online teaching and educational programs will attract more overseas students, so the University will gain its advantages in today’s globalized environment. Lastly, the three technologies enable streamline operations in education. For example, MOOCs streamline courses, so all the students can take the courses by finishing the assignments or works streamlined by computing systems.

The new technologies may also bring about some challenges for the education industry. For example, the application of facial recognition may violate students’ or staff’s right of privacy. For example, students may report that their behaviors are illegally monitored. Google Docs may lead to the controversies over copyrights. Since the contents of filed are open to the users, people’s writing work can by stolen by others while could not be tracked or discovered. The MOOCs may lead to the cheating behaviors since it is hard to confirm who are actually taking the courses. Also, MOOCs may not effectively motivate students’ study because without the face-to-face guidance of instructors, personal discipline of students is required more.

3. Future prospects for the technologies

In the future, it is estimated that the three technologies will enjoy a remarkably rapid development and more of their contributions to education will be discovered. First of all, I believe that the technologies, especially Google Docs and MOOCS, will continue to be used in organizations because they enable efficient collaboration and study online. Facial recognition technology has not been widely applied by educational institutions, while in the future, it will be an important part of campus security.

Secondly, I feel that there are still some areas within the education industry where the three technologies are not currently being utilized to their full potential. In terms of facial recognition, in addition to sectors such as school security and academic integrity, this technology could also be applied to commercial sectors such as campus canteens or campus supermarket. Based on this technology, students do not have to take money with them because the IP-based cameras will accurately identify them and then the money they spend in canteens or supermarkets will be automatically paid from their digital accounts. For Google Docs. And MOOCs, I think they should extend its scopes to the outside business market. For example, Federation University could cooperate with other organizations to provide online courses or instruction to people through Google Docs and MOOCs.

Lastly, but not least, the return on investment will be the driven force for the three technologies. In the future, thanks to the three technologies, the educational institutions will save the costs on guards, more professors or assistants, and classroom construction. Also, more economic returns will be gained by extending the educational services to the global market through Google Docs. and MOOCs. It is forecasted that, based on Google Docs and MOOCs, in the future, the Federation University will not longer be an Australia-based university, but a comprehensive educational institution which serves the global citizens who are longing for knowledge and skills. To achieve this goal, the three technologies should be used frequently and continuously optimized.

4. Conclusion

All in all, facial recognition, Google Docs and massive open online courses (MOOCs) are three important technologies which have significantly impacts on the education industry. It is forecasted that in the near future, the three technologies will greatly lead to a revolution in education because they will fundamentally change the way of educational resources distribution and the relationships between schools and students. For example, facial recognition could effectively improve school safety through real-time guest check-in and campus monitoring, and in exams, the technologies could confirm participants’ identities to avoid cheating. Google Docs promotes interaction and collaborations among students, which greatly saves students and teachers’ time in communication. MOOCs streamline courses and provides great convince and flexibility for students. Colleges and other educational institutions can even earn profits by attracting outside people to pay for the courses through new educational mode. Though the three technologies may lead to challenges such as issues of privacy, copyrights and academic cheating, they will be optimized and adjusted in the future to solve these issues. Currently, Google Docs and MOOCs have developed well and widely used in education, while facial recognition has not been used by some educational institutions. However, I believe that with the development of Information Technology, facial recognitions will contribute to education industry in the future.
