Since its release, “Frozen” has made $1.2 billion worldwide, becoming one of the best-selling movies on Walt Disney’s history. The soundtrack of the film generated millions of sales and even today, the theme song “Let It Go” still is so popular that people, especially kids, are singing it all over the places. There are many reasons why the movie “Frozen” could take the world, one of them that can be considered so important is the success of its soundtrack.

At the beginning of the story, the movie intends to demonstrate the background of the story. In this scene, there are two songs used when introducing the characters and their relationships.

“Do you want to build a snow man” is the first song and one of the most important songs in Frozen. The song has three sections, which each one of them starts with “do you want to build a snow man”, and these sections state different stages of the characters. In the first bridge of the song, Elsa, the daughter of the king of Arendelle who has icy power, locks her sister out of her door because she cannot conceal her power. In the first section, both are still little kids and Anna is singing to let her sister know that she really wants to go into Elsa’s room and be closer with her. Then in the second section, both characters have grown up to be teenagers, although Anna still sings and complains that Elsa never comes out and play with her, she is getting used to it. During the bridge of the song, the climax of this scene is demonstrated. Elsa and Anna’s parents died in a shipwreck, and therefore the story is pushed further that Elsa will become the queen of Arendelle. In the third section, although the melody is the same as the previous songs, the tone of the song changes a lot to show the sadness of Anna and Elsa who just lost their parents. The song “do you want to build a snowman is a very good demonstration of Jane Fuer’s point of redefining music as song. As the movie moves along, the song perfectly describes Elsa and Anna’s emotional movement, and the change of instrument using helps with the tone too. Regardless the lyrics of the song, as Jane Fuer points out, the song can be redefined as a singing which makes the movie more colorful.

Another song in this first part of the movie is “For the First Time in Forever”. This song is used to connect the background introduction and the development of the story. At the beginning of the song, Ana is singing alone and showing her excitement of opening the gate to welcome guests to see the castle and her sister’s coronation ceremony. The soundtrack is not only the soundtrack, but also the inner monologue of Ana. The excitement of Ana cannot be expressed powerfully without the soundtrack. Within Ana’s singing and the movie scene, the happiness is being extremely portrayed. But when Elsa joins singing, in her melody, it is easy to see her fear. The two melodies are singing at the same time, which obviously shown the two very different motivations and emotion. This helps to push movie further and lead audience to wonder what will happen in the next. When the song is about to end, Ana bumped into a donkey and so the movie goes on.

At Elsa’s coronation ceremony, Ana meets Prince Hans of the Southern Isles. Prince Hans brings Ana out and they fell in love very fast. This song, unlike other songs in the movie, is an antiphonal singing, meaning that when Ana sings one line, Hans responds her singing on the next line. As Fuer explains, the soundtrack, even is not mandatory required to have in a movie, makes the movie more interesting and memorable.

The most important and well-known song in “Frozen” is “Let it go”, which is sang by Elsa. The scene before the song played in the movie is after Ana told Elsa she wants to marry Prince Hans, Elsa says no to Ana because she thinks Ana does not know what is love and cannot marry a guy she just met for a day. The argument leads Ana to be so angry and pissed Elsa off. The scene ends up with Elsa cannot control her icy power so she freezes the whole Arendelle and flees away. “Let it go” starts after she flees to the mountain and starts thinking what she can do. The lyrics of the song, as Fuer explains, combines classical and popular genre together, which creates a unique and suitable soundtrack of the scene. The lyrics also are important in this song because it is a soliloquy and is a very important point of the movie where Elsa is changing from concealing her power to using her power. The song perfectly combines the lyrics and instrument, making the song has not only popular elements but also classical ones.

Other soundtrack of “Frozen”, “In summer”,“Frozen Heart”, “Reindeers are better than people”, are all very colorful and demonstrative songs. These songs corporates with the movie scene and helps audience to understand the story better and feel the character’s emotional movements better. “In Summer” is sung by Olaf, the snowman Elsa accidentally made and brought to be alive when she left the kingdom of Arendelle and built a castle. The song make Olaf really vivid and lively, and make the snow really feel like summer. “Frozen Heart” is the first song that has been played in the movie. The movie starts with a scene of workers digging the ice. “Frozen Heart” is sung by the workers, and the lyric “frozen heart” is a good prelude which lead the story to begin. “Reindeers are better than people” is actually not very long but the lyrics are hilarious. As Elsa left Arendelle, Ana feels very bad and wants to bring her sister back but unfortunately, she got lost in the mountain. At this time she met this mountaineer Kristoff and his reindeer. Kristoff is singing this song when Ana wants him to give her a ride to the west mountain. The song actually shows a comparison between Kristoff’s character and Prince Hans’s. This is very important when Kristoff starts helping Ana to fight back Prince Hans who intends to kill Ana and Elsa and takes over power of the kingdom of Arendelle.

In summary, “Frozen” has been very successful of combing its soundtrack to the movie. As Jane Fuer says, soundtrack is more than just songs that give sound to a movie; there are a lot deeper meaning in these singings and songs. Without using these successful soundtracks, “Frozen” would not become so famous and popular that almost everyone knows the storyline of the movie and can sing “Let It Go” and other songs have been sung in the movie. Soundtrack is essential to a movie because it shows the emotional movement of the characters and express the movie by a more colorful way.
