I was born and raised in China, a country that is considered one of the four greatest ancient civilizations and is one of the few of countries which is led by communist party. Growing up in China, I have learned so much about Chinese culture and ancient Chinese art. I have deeply fall in love with art since I was young and have learned Chinese brush painting and Chinese calligraphy for many years. I always feel that art is so fantastic and have the desire to learn more about art.

After I had finished my high school year, I made a decision to spend my college time in Brazil, a country that has fantastic history of art and very unique culture. I have learned so much when I was there, and I also found that the economic system of a country had such an essential influence on the country’s art development.

When I first got to Brazil, the life was so different and I have experienced the culture shock. What Brazilians ate and what their day to day life was like was so different than what I had imagined. So that learning the Brazilian culture was so hard for me and also, the language difference also caused me a lot of troubles. But fortunately, I finally overcame all these difficulties and have get used to the life in Brazil. From that point, I have explored so much about the economy, the art, the government, and the culture of Brazil.

In 2008, the global financial crisis led Brazil economy to suffer the greatest loss in Brazilian history since the Great Depression a century ago. The financial crisis had a huge impact on Brazilian’s life and many people lost their jobs. In order to make the economy come back up, the Brazilian government started to higher the interest rate, as a result, the inflation rate had tripled in a year and the money became less valuable than ever before. The oil price also went up so much that a family almost could not afford to pay for the gas. I saw that the life became so hard in Brazil as the global financial crisis hit. Comparing to China, the influence of the global financial crisis was incredibly huge and many people in Brazil started to save money so that they would be prepared when next financial crisis happened.

The economy recession of Brazil happened in 2009, a time when the Brazilian government started building the soccer field for the World Cup in 2010. I was very happy at the time because I thought it was so great I would have the chance to watch World Cup in the host country. But soon I was shocked. Not like in 2008, every Chinese was so proud and happy to prepare for hosting the Olympic Games, people in Brazil was so mad at the government because it spent millions of dollars to host the World Cup instead of spending the money on education and medical care. Even though Brazil was such a good place for hosting the World Cup since many South American countries had the best soccer teams in the world and the weather in Rio de Janeiro was perfect for playing soccer, my friends, teachers, schoolmates all did not want the government to spend a lot of money on the World Cup.

The economic crisis a year ago made people afraid that if the government spent so much money on the World Cup, the economy recession will slow down so that there would be a financial crisis again. My classmates, teachers, and other Brazilians, all went on strike to protest Brazilian government to spend a lot of money on hosting the World Cup.

One thing I remembered the most from strike was an advertising produced to during that time. In the ad, there was a little black boy was holding a plate that contains a soccer ball inside. The boy cried so hard because he was so hungry and was hoping there was food in the plate instead of a soccer ball. The Brazilians tried to tell the government that spend the money to feed the famine instead of building the soccer courts through this ad.

I have learned so much from this experience that the economy could influence people to think differently. If the Brazilian economy system was good enough and was trustful, people would not went on strike and protested the hosting of the World Cup.

Referring back to China when Beijing was chosen to host the Olympic Games. Even though there were also a lot of people doubted that the government would spend too much money on the Olympic, people did not go on strike because the 2008 financial crisis did not influence Chinese economic so much comparing to Brazil. Therefore, I have found that the economy could be the main driver of whether people would like the government to spend money on other activities besides education, medical care and other things that influence people’s quality of life. Being in Brazil and seeing the how people had reacted to the World Cup was a unique experience to me and helped me to learn to look at things from other aspects.

Besides exercising the special events such as World Cup, I also experienced and learned so much from the day to day life in Brazil. During my time in Brazil, I had visited several slums in Rio de Janeiro. One of them that was the most famous had a Michael Jackson’s statue standing in the slum. Even though this was not my first time visiting slums since I had been to many of them in China when I was in middle school and high school, I was still shocked when I was visiting this small village.

Many people there did not even have clothes to wear and they do not even have clean water to drink. When I just got there, little kids were standing along the street and begging me for food. Their parents did not have jobs and the only life resources they have were given by the government, even though they were obviously not enough for raising the family. Some of the children even were trying to find food in the trash cans.

When I was talking to them, they could barely speak since they had not learned a lot of words. Many families there could not afford their kids to go to schools, and the parents themselves even had no education. I remember that a story a people in the slum told me was that these adults, when they went to the city to get food or to ask for a job, could not identify which bathroom was for men and which was for women because they could not read. So they had to wait for someone to come out from the bathroom to see which side of the bathroom they should go. Although when I first heard the story, it was funny to me. But after a while, when I rethought about this joke, it was not funny at all because I could not even imagine how these people lived and what they had suffered.

When I was walking around the village, it was so ironic that I saw on the other side of the mountain were tall buildings and wealthy suburbs. In this same mountain, people’s lives were completely different. Standing under the Michael Jackson’s statue that was placed in the central area of the slum, I was thinking of Michael Jackson’s song “Heal the World”, a song he meant to call people to heal the sorrows of the world.

My time at Brazil was full of adventures and dangers some times. The most memorable day for me when I was in Rio de Janeiro was that few poor people from the slums near by the city who carried guns with them stopped our school bus and went on the bus. They pointed the gun at us and asked us to give them our cell-phones. Everyone was shocked especially me since I had never even looked at a real gun in my life in China. These poor people did not mean to kill anyone. They were just in hunger and the only way for them to get food was stealing and robbing. I was not only scared from exercising this robbery, but also had thought that if the economy system of Brazil was better, these people would not need to go on street and commit crimes.

As an art lover, I have spent the majority of my time to study art in Brazil and to explore the difference between the art development in China and in Brazil. During my time in Rio de Janeiro, I truly felt that every single Brazilian is an artist. Not only because that all of them loved arts, but also because they had their own unique views on art.

Many people in Brazil were just middle lower classes or even below, but they were all crazy about art and always wanted to talk about art with me and learn about Chinese art as well. In China, only reach people were willing to pay the ticket to go to concerts or art exhibitions. After staying in Brazil for a while, this opinion of mine had completely changed. People in Brazil, even the lower class people, such as factory workers, farmers, or minimum wage employees, went to art exhibitions once a while.

Once I met a young guy who was an automobile repairman when I was staying in a little motel in Rio de Janeiro. He was very friendly so I had a conversation with him. He told me that even though he was just a worker, but he loved art so much that he had created many small pieces of painting during his free time. At the last day he was staying at the hotel, he gave me a plate that had his own painting on it. The painting was very creative and from him I have learned that not only those people who were rich could enjoy arts, but normal people like this young man also could be an artist and explore the art.

All of my experiences I had in Brazil had helped me to build my characteristics and learn about the world and the art. I majored in Portuguese in my university in Rio de Janeiro, and since Portuguese was a language major, I met so many people and as my Portuguese became better, I was able to communicate with the local people and learn many things from them. I found that even though most people were poor and did not have a lot of money in Brazil, they were all passion about what they love and were willing to spend their time doing what they love.

Going and studying in Brazil has completely changed my life. In China, many people said to me since I was young that majoring in art was the least career choice because most artists could not make a lot of money, many of them could not even afford their own lives. My parents also warned me not to major in art because it would not bring me a future.

Therefore I gave up my dream of being an artist after I finished my high school. I thought my parents were right and I should major in something that would ensure I would have enough money to make a living. But after seeing all these people in Brazil who loved art so much and were not the typical successful person in my parents’ mind, my mind had completely changed. Although these people were not considered to be successful in many people’s eyes, they were doing what they loved and what they were passion about.

After graduating from college, I realized that art was something I really love and wanted to spend my time on. I never got tired going to art exhibitions and learning new things about art. I made the decision to continue my dream soon after I had graduated and I am sure this is not too late to do what I really love- an artist.
