In Anton Chekov's "About Love" Alekhin also known as Pavel Konstantinovich shares a story within a story about his one true love Anna Alekeevna with Burkin, the high school teacher and Ivan Inanovich, the veterinary surgeon.  The story shares how he and Anna grew to share an unconditional love for each other.  The two sacrificed their love for each other for the happiness of others since Anna was already married and had two children.  Later on in his life, Alekhin realizes that he had missed his one chance of true love, when he had the chance they should have sacrificed everything and attempted to live a happy life together.  Although Alehin's tone while telling his story seems to doubt the possibility of true happiness, it is not until after he is finished that he seems to understand that by not sacrificing and taking chances in life, you hinder your chance of ever-attaining true contentment.

Living in his own form of futliarnost, Alekhin enforces the idea that ones own happiness is set upon the ideal they have envisioned for themselves.  

I an educated man with a knowledge of languages, should, instead of devoting myself to science or literary work, live in the country, rush around like a squirrel in a cage, work hard with never a penny to show for it (198).

The term "futliarnost" is used to explain one who encasts himself physically, psychologically or morally in order to reduce the contact between oneself and the rest of the world.  Alekhin's state of affairs with Anna comes in the form of a rejection of love, forcing him to keep busy with daily routines to keep his mind from pondering upon his love for Anna although his heart did not follow.  In this quote he describes himself as like a squirrel in a cage, comparable to Belikov in "A Man In a Case" both men were occupying their lives to fill the spaces of their longing for their ideal love.  Alekhin wants so desperately to live a life with Anna but morally he knows this cannot be.  He could never think to betray her family whom he loved, by disrupting their life of "harmony and comfort."  Its seems that years later, Alekhin still to puts himself away in a diligent life full of hard work and demanding chores.  This means of every day routine has Alekhin feeling content with his life.  It is in his older age, in his heart he regrets missing his chance at happiness but then again, he seems to be happy, or at least is convinced he is at ease with himself.  It is as if Alekhin does not give himself time to feel unhappy with his life, he gives the impression that he is content and fortunate to be where he is.  It is after he has a chance to reflect upon his story, Alekhin realizes that not acting on his love for Anna, did limit his possibility of being a happier man.  But, similarly, he is content with himself lessoning the guilt of his regrets. 

In order to have a chance of reaching true happiness in your life, chances must be taken possibly risking the happiness of others. 

I confessed my love for her, and with a burning pain in my heart

I realized how unnecessary, how petty, and how deceptive all that had hindered us from loving was (201).

It is this passage where Alekhin's epiphany allows him to realize how they had made such a mistake; he feels that everything should have been sacrificed for the only real love they would ever know.  Due to the concealment of real feelings under the protective cloak of social behavior, his chance was now gone, sacrificed for the happiness of others.  Their fears of not fulfilling ideals of each other held them back as well,

I loved her tenderly, deeply, but I reflected and kept asking myself what our love could lead to if we had not the strength to fight against it (199).

As young and in love Alekhin continued his struggle with his desire for Anna, this question continued to linger with him.  Would it be honorable?  What would they make of their lives if they were to run away together? There was no guarantee of true happiness, if there even was such a thing.  He states himself the unknown, " how far questions of personal happiness are of consequence in love...(194)"

You have to make sacrifices in love, but in Alekhin and Anna's situation, they had to sacrifice each other.  Similar to the story of Ohmalas, the happiness of the whole town was at the expense of a suffering little boy, this resembles the suffering of Alekhin for the happiness of Anna's family.  Alekhin and Anna never allowed their feelings to take over their conscious, therefore never knowing what it would be like to truly be in love.  As storyteller, Alekhin realizes that Anna and himself had to limit their actions to pleasing ones of those around them.  The two struggled not to let a streak of emotional romance from their long conversations be revealed hindering their relationship to mostly thoughts and hope for their future.

Happiness cannot be understood as a concrete state of mind, it is an unexplained emotion that leads into the mystery of love. 

This is a great mystery.  Everything else that has been written or said about love is not a conclusion, but only a statement of questions  which have remained unanswered (194).

Maybe it was this way of thinking that made it so easy for Alekhin to live in love with Anna and not being able to have her.  Anna and her husband were a compatible pair, surely she loved her husband but with Alekhin it was a different type of love.  They shared an unconscious real love that was filled with emotion and desire lasting for a lifetime. 

We Russians...Love is usually poeticized, decorated with roses, nightingales; we Russians decorate our loves with these momentous questions...(195)

Anna and Alekhin could not decorate their love with roses and such things making it all the more real and not based on material things.  Is it possible that if these two people would have expressed their love for each other in such a way their relationship may have been different.  One may think that because they did not really obtain a relationship, they were never really in love, although others may think that was their happiness.  They were able to enjoy and love each other as it was with out the obligations that could possibly deter a relationship.

Although Alekhin may have lost his one chance of true love he would ever know, one may argue that the fact that he had the chance to be in love was a taste of happiness.  One must take chances and make sacrifices in order to obtain such a passionate emotion; if that person refuses to change their ways they may be pushing away a chance of happiness that may only come once.  It is not until Alekhin is finished telling his story that he comes to realize many things about the situation and himself.  Others may look upon happiness as a state of mind you create for yourself, a state of contentment.  Alekhin was able to reach this state by occupying himself and achieving good in his life.  One can look upon this story as one of irreverence or a lesson in life.  Happiness is relative; a person can create happiness or unhappiness depending on how they choose to act upon chances life and loved ones present to them.
