Different views on globalization

In an era where globalization develops in an unprecedented speed than ever before, many issues and conflicts will definitely surface, along with some opportunities as well. Therefore, dealing with trade-offs properly is the core of benefiting from the irreversible trend.

Lots of people, because of some issues surfaced, job losses and income slowdown in particular, have got some distrust in globalization. According to the article by Crane, he cites China and India as reasons for it. Regions that faced growing exposure to Chinese competition had higher unemployment, lower labor-force participation and lower wages and the effects grew over that period, a research done by David Autor, David Dorn and Gordon Hanson denotes, in which shows the exact statistics from 1990 to 2007. There’s also another similar research aiming at employment at multinational companies with headquarters in the United States, companies that account for roughly 60 percent of American exports and imports. In the past decade, those companies eliminated a net of nearly 3 million jobs in the United States while adding another 2.4 million jobs abroad. As two giant trade partners of the United States, or even the whole world, China and India indeed create some distrust of globalization towards many people.

Take North America as an example. Two giant countries, America and Canada, somewhat hurt from globalization, typically the employment and income issues, as mentioned above. Lots of surveys and data have shown that globalization does increases the unemployment rate as well as declines the income of the American and Canadian people, especially to those who are not well-educated. However, except for the bad side, these two countries also benefit from the globalization. The competitiveness coming from developing countries compels the U.S and Canada to improve productivity in manufacturing. On the other hand, globalization enables other countries to export goods with lower prices and higher quality compared with the domestic market, namely, American and Canadian people can enjoy cheaper prices and save money.

Globalization brings me more benefits than hurt, as far as I’m concerned. As a Canadian adolescent, I should definitely be an economical person, as I don’t have any stable income and my family is not wealth. And globalization brings me cheaper goods with premium quality because of the high competitiveness among every countries. Furthermore, the variety of goods caused by globalization also means I can have more choices. As a future university graduate, if I choose to access further education, globalization does enables me to get more and better resources, since my choices come from all over the world. If I decide to find a job, the increasing amount of multinational companies produce more job opportunities because they need talents to develop their business. As a future entrepreneur, globalization means a bigger market, which can help me to expand my market and earn more money. Though it also has some risks, as long as I can deal with them properly, it can bring me huge profits.

Looking back to these two articles, the authors own some different opinions on globalization. Firstly, Crane focused on the opinion that globalization brings us a lot of benefits while Alden thought it would be harmful to many people because it’s the main cause of job losses and income slowdown. Moreover, at the end of the article, they also provide somewhat different opinions. Crane pay much attention to the job losses issue so he insisted that the issue can be solved only by creating more job opportunities instead of blocking change and preserving old jobs. Alden’s answer seems more specific, he argued that the United States, or even the whole world, should make use of the huge market, creating more opportunities and improving the wages for everyone. Their opinions can be a guidance for us to develop better, I think.
