Focus on external forces that influence values, attitudes, and behaviors

In the first year in University of Texas-Arlington, I, together with two of my friends, who were enrolled in MBA program at that time, decided to do private car dealership business. The first challenge was to ascertain that we had the qualification to carry out the business. Therefore, we needed to identify any business connection that we have already had at that time. To overcome this seeming insurmountable challenge, I first assessed my resources. What inspired us to step into this risky and unfamiliar field was we finally connected with a friend who came from our hometown Guangzhou, China, and he himself, owned vehicle dealership certificate we need.  

The second challenge was how to lower the amount of money that we spent at the auction. The rule goes on as following: when the auction starts you’ll be informed what car you are bidding on; the starting is what the bidding increments will be; if there are no bids after 5 seconds then the last person that bid wins the item. The interesting aspect of auction is you need to take other bidders’ act and mind into consideration when you offer your bid. A general evaluation of the price is required before you bid. If you bid over the market price, you will gain no profit even after you get the car from the auction. On the other hand, if your bid is too low, there is no way for you to get your ideal car. We gained experience and gradually familiar with the rule of when to offer our bid as well as how much we should offer the increments each time based on other bidders’ intentions.

The third challenge was to target potential customer. International students, especially those who were from China, were our target customers, because we noticed there was a huge market, which could provide us sufficient demand. In order to promote out selling, it was possible that we would first appraise the value by ourselves, which required us to carry out extensive market research at the very first place. We were expected to have sensitive feeling and accurate calculation towards the car we sold. If we could not list a reasonable price at the very first place, experienced customer would bargain for the price over and over again. Our goal was trying to sell out the car as soon as possible with even not much profit rather than keep the car long enough to get our money stuck. Cash flow was important in our selling because the faster we sold out, the more cash we would have in our pocket to bid new car at auction to continue our selling cycle. Therefore, dealing with customers has intellectual requirements, which enabled me to develop an acid sense of the function and organization from both the macro and micro level of this society.

Integrity and honesty is the spirit required by those who do business. The behavior of falsification and fabrication is unbearable and inconsistent with my moral belief. I believe that having good moral practices in business promotes honesty between two parties, both merchant and customer. Therefore, it is vital to approach every issue with integrity, and acceptable ethical standards. During the process of selling the car we bid from auction, we tried to list every situation and aspect of the as detailed as possible. We promised not to deceive by focus on honesty and integrity to earn money in a long-term perspective. Customers were mostly satisfied with our price in proportion of our total honesty about the situation of the car. The decision of being transparent and direct of our selling process I made allowed me to preserve the morale of my teammates and the exacting moral standards of being a qualified business partner.

By focusing on the external forces that affect values, attitudes and behaviors, it helps us better understand the intentions of our own and other people around us. While we are all creatures of the various groups, organizations and governments in our environments, we are also their creators. Sociology provides the tools and skills we need to take a more active role in creating, participating in, advancing and managing such groups. In my own case, I have learned to (1) make connection skillfully by identifying the proper people and program to start my career; (2) use intellectual tools and critical thinking to reach the most reasonable decision; (3) improve my ability to socialize with different kinds of people; (4) preserve honesty and integrity in a socialized business partnership. I firmly believe that the four lessons I learned from my car dealership experience qualifies me to be a qualified candidate in applying for University of Texas-Austin Liberal Arts College of Sociology Department. We are faced with an ever increasingly complex and rapidly changing social milieu in modern industrial-bureaucratic societies. Being a student in College of Liberal Arts in Department of Sociology of University of Texas-Austin will undoubtedly provide me with the conceptual tools and methods for fully understanding this great social milieu.
