A Discussion of Family Businesses

       Family businesses is having a new look around the globe face. In this writing, it is to have a comparison and contrast based upon my research findings of several articles on family business.

      These articles discuss the challenges of family business as the environment changes. Family business has a lot of advantages. In the early establishment of the enterprise, because there are strong cohesion within the family, and greater degree of sharing of resources, it is conducive to the early development of entrepreneurship, and is conducive to upgrading of it as well with the era change. There is the legacy of former generations, which becomes the responsibility of next generations become for maintaining the family business(The Family Business Survey 2008/2009,  1).But once the enterprise has developed into a certain scale, in order to embark on the real modern management path of an enterprise, there is a thorny, and rough road. In the early establishment of enterprises in the initial social and economic environment, there are many suitable and favorable factors for the survival of family business given the characteristics of them, so after several generations of rapid development, the use of family management methods have become the general management model for the majority of private enterprises. From an international perspective, even in countries where the market economy developed, family business is the most common form of business, and many well-known global companies are still with a family color. However, with the gradual development of the market economy and the increasingly global economy, the pure family business is only founded in some industries, with a certain range, which have limited survival and growth space. They can not become the real protagonist in the market competition. When the market changes faster and faster with more and more intense competition, the drawbacks of enterprises completely controlled by the family members and the closed family management appeared. With the growth of family business, and the internal formation of various interest groups, it is making the leaders will face more complex and even dilemma in dealing with the interests of the relationship due to mixed feelings of complex relationships.  When business leaders and family members is in the violation of the system, the management is difficult to deal with ordinary employees in a non-discriminatory way, which left a hidden business management risks. Thus, Family business shared a very common feature that they can work through bitter life but can not enjoy the results. In the early business, all the contradictions are covered by the passion of entrepreneurship, but after the start of the business, it  caused obstacles to the organization's healthy growth. When the views of honor, money and rights is divided, between the brothers, between father and son, it may appear the phenomenon that they worked against each other .

      In addition, these articles also discuss restrictions that the family business may face . With the progress of economic development, and the development of globalization, the further development of family business has been put in front of many of them. Family business malpractice are gradually exposed, and thus the further development of family-oriented enterprises are facing severe challenges. There is restrictions on human resources. According to Connecticut Family Business Survey, labor costs is worried by 42% of respondents and a lack of qualified workers is reported by over 41% of them(Rathgeber, and  Dino, 3). Within the family Family-owned enterprises seem to have an exclusion of external resources and vitality. It is especially because in the family business, the general foreign staff is difficult to enjoy the equity, with the mentality as being always just migrant workers, who find it always difficult to integrate into the organization. In addition, due to the difficulty of absorbing external talent, the higher level of development of enterprises will be limited. The biggest drawback of the family business lies in the social elite who can not come in. the ownership and management of the typical family business solely or largely rests with one or more members of a single family(KPMG and Family Business Australia Survey of Family Businesses 2009, 3). A few brothers are holding the highest position of the enterprise, and outside talented people can not come, and the way the family thinking is somewhat similar. There is no breakthrough point. They have their own ideas, and thus to decide something is difficult, which is easy to delay business opportunities. There is no continuing trusted advisors of the families(Hausner, and Freeman, 7). They lack scientific decision-making process, which leads to mistakes, but decision-making independence is an important guarantee for the success of many private enterprises. Many entrepreneur in the process of growth is bold. However, with the development of enterprises, and the external environment changes, business owners’ personal experience began to fail as business is getting bigger and bigger. The risk of investment is also growing. Unlike the early start, when one or two mistakes can also be made up for the loss. Thus, this time of globalization, to ensure that the decision-making democratic, and scientific is more and more important. The era of globalization begins the exposure to the drawbacks of the family management model and dictatorship decision-making mechanism of many industry. It is believed that the family business system has organizational barriers, human resources bottlenecks, capital bottlenecks and other natural ills.  The development will eventually be subject to these constraints. These problems show that family businesses around the world are faced with huge growth challenges and escalation of ideas, and management change issues are placed in front of family business management decision makers.

       At the same time, the necessity of family business reform to adapt to the development of globalization has also been discussed. Family business, although there are many drawbacks, are still the main body of the private economy. According to a program now in development that will help companies of Connecticut ,  family businesses have a bright future, despite of these external difficulties(Rathgeber, and  Dino, 2). Through the family’s stable and relatively honest guarantee organization, they develop from small family workshops and gradually extended the scale of production, and become the group operated large enterprises. According to business experience and socio-economic theory, the new century will enter the early stage of the survival and growth of the formation of family business adjustment period. Just as , the reform of a meeting place culture, immediate decision making, higher strategic planning are important factors to overcome this unfavorable factors(Leif, Colleen and Ward, 232). From the creation to the growth, expansion, from small to large, from weak to strong, factors of the main resistance affecting the family business development focused on: narrow capital access channels, highly centralized enterprise property , clutter of human resources management, ambiguous business strategy and development model. Therefore, the family business is experiencing an urgent need to get rid of obstacles to the development, so that their enter the right track of healthy development.

      There are some advantages of family business. The lowest cost of communication,and cohesion is strong. Also, with trusted people to do things , there is the most confidence. There are some disadvantages. At first, corporate profits is difficult to allocate. It is necessary for reform in the era of globalization.
