Parents Should Pay Attention to Obesity

Through the measurements of Body Mass Index or BMI, which is calculated by using child’s weight (kg/lbs) and height (m/in), parent can identity childhood obesity. When compared to the BMI with the peers of the same age and sex, children with a BMI at or above 95 is considered to be overweight, actually, even children over 85 are classified as at risk for obesity (The Obesity Society [TOS], n.d.). In the past decades, the number of childhood obesity has rocketed. TOS research shows that every one in five American children is overweight, especially among African Americans, Native Americans, etc. Obesity do cause great harm to children psychological and body health, such as low self-concept, depressive symptoms, eating disorder, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, etc. To make things worse, the heavier children are getting heavier and heavier that the parents should right now pay attention to obesity and take actions.

We are what we eat. Holguin (2004) pointed that, “the fast-food consumption has increased fivefold among children since 1970.” Fast-food, as is reported, contains more sugar, fat and carbohydrates but fewer fruits and vegetables that children actually need. Children get extra calories by eating fast-food daily without enough exercise, and consequently will put on weight per year. To address the obesity problem, parents should first pay attention to children’s daily diet and help build their healthy eating habits. Parent should first know what (healthy) foods are acceptable to children, and gradually increase food consistency and variety, be it in home, at school or outside in restaurant. Second, more fruit and vegetable instead of snacks food, because dietary fiber in fruit and vegetable can help children better digest food. Third, serve food in smaller containers each time, added when not enough. Last, parent can choose a healthier cooking style, boil and steam instead of frying.

Apart from lowering the daily calorie intake, parents should also help children lose their extra fat to become lighter. Developmental coordination disorder (DCD) is not rare among children. Children with this disorder seem less unwilling to do physical activities than others do. However, according to a research on the relationship between DCD and obesity and overweight age 9-14y, Cairney et al. (2005) found that DCD may be a risk factor for boys for overweight and obesity, but for girls, there’s no difference. Parents whose children are with DCD can turn to pediatrician or family physician. While for other parents, there are some tips for getting children to exercise: first, the parents who want their children to exercise should get exercise first, be a role modal, and get children involved in physical activities with you. Your attitude can influence your children. Second, make physical activity a daily exercise and help children build their sports habits. Third, Take more outdoor activities instead of inside watching TV at home. Most of all, get your children interested in sports, get them move (Heather, n.d.).
