Julian Treasure: How do you talk so people want to listen

The speech I selected is How to speak so that people want to listen by Julian Treasure. The speech is listed as the top 25 TED talks of all time. (Juliantreasure.com, 2016) Julian Treasure is top-rated international speaker. He is an expert in sound and communication. Julian Treasure’s vision is to make the world sound beautiful and now he is assisting individuals to make and receive sound consciously. (Juliantreasure.com, 2016) The speech is aimed to create a norm in the public that people can focus on their speaking consciously and attract listeners to accept their ideas and thoughts.

The delivery skills of the speaker play a crucial role in a speech, which can express ideas and make the speaker to be understood. Firstly, speech posture will bring a direct impression to the audience. Generally speaking, there is a convenient speech posture, that is, the so-called "relaxed posture". (Haakenson, 1970) During the ten-minute speech, Julian Treasure maintains a relax posture, which shows his confidence. The relaxed posture makes the audience believe in his thoughts. Excessive tension will not only show awkward posture, but also cause adverse effects for the tongue movements. Secondly, eye contact is a vital part of a speech. The speaker cannot avoid the eye contact with the audience. (Haakenson, 1970) During the speech, Julian always looks at the audience. However, he doesn’t stare at someone but move his eyes slowly to the all audience, which makes the speech so natural. Thirdly, facial expressions will give the audience a very deep impression on the speech. It is normal that tension, fatigue, joy, anxiety, and other emotions are all clearly exposed on the face. Improper facial expression can easily make the speech lack of convincing. (Haakenson, 1970) In most of the time, Julian keeps a calm facial expression without changes. However, he will change his facial expression to express his examples like angry and high pitch. Fourthly, Julian Treasure has a lot of interaction with the audience. He will ask some questions to the audience and make warm up exercises with the audience, which makes the speech vivid.

The speech exquisitely illustrates the way of speaking that will make others listen consciously. First and foremost, Julian Treasure shows seven sins of speaking: gossip, judging, negativity, complaining, excuses, lying and dogmatism. He explains the negative aspects how these sins will affect people’s listening. Next, he demonstrates four ways of good speaking, which is abbreviated as “HAIL”. “H” represents honesty, which requires the speaker to be clear and straight. “A” represents authenticity of the speaker. “I” stands for integrity and “L” refers to love to others and wish them well. Thirdly, he introduces six key points when speaking: register, timbre, prosody, pace, pitch and volume. He hopes the audience can pay careful attention to these points when speaking. Fourthly, he teaches the audience the warm up exercises before making a speech like “ahhhh”, “ba,ba,ba”, “brrrr”, “la,la,la”, “Rrrrr” and “weeeaawww”. Finally, Julian concludes the reason for the speech. He hopes people could use designed soundscape to make powerful speaking, because listeners are always conscious.

Transition words are an effective tool to combine different parts of a speech and make the speech more nature and smooth. During the speech, he uses a lot of words that introduce the main points like firstly, secondly, thirdly, and, and also. With the help of these words, the listeners can catch up the main points of his speech and follow his pace properly. In the beginning, he uses a question “How can we speak powerfully” to present the topic. In the middle of the speech, he uses the picture of a tool box to introduce the ways to improve our speaking, which is very clear and vivid for the audience and listeners.

In a conclusion, the speech has given the audience an impressive lesson. Firstly, speaking is a quite normal thing, but people always ignore the intrinsic power. Due to the ignorance, people will say something suspicious, exaggerated, excuses and lies unconsciously or consciously, which will result in severe consequences. Secondly, the listeners will judge one person according to the content and voice. With different pitch and volume, one sentence will represent different meanings and produce differentiated feedbacks. Thirdly, speaking is a kind of art and the way of speaking requires people’s attention and practices. With proper speaking, people can show their charisma and confidence and leave a deep impression on the listeners’ mind. Last but not least, in accordance with the attention of people, words will become more beautiful and voices will be more powerful and confident, which will make the society more stable and harmonious.
