“What you do not want done to yourself, do not do to others.” (Confucius)
A piece of news from SFGATE reads that “Facebook said Tuesday it will give $1 million to local organizations helping those people and businesses affected by the Wine Country fires.” The definition of a good person is one who is helpful, devoted, with a spirit of self-sacrifice and so on, always having unselfish consideration for the benefits of others. Many stories have delivered a common core idea that each and every one are supposed to be good and most of us would like to be good people. Furthermore, we do not want to be bad people. Everyone has mercy on other pitiful people. When we were young, we used the criterion of good people and bad people to distinguish two opposing characters in stories. Absolutely, we think that we stand by good people. The concept of good people has always been so powerful that it has influenced much or even dominated our lives. Good people may guide the mood of our lives and their impacts on us are so great that we are supposed to pay more attention to them in this regard. Therefore, what good qualities do good people have?
First of all, Krebs’s mother is a good person because she is devoted in “Soldier’s Home”. This story demonstrates that his mother is a devout Christian who prays for Krebs, and she requires her son to kneel and pray to God as well. It is quite difficult to know whether she is a real devout Christian, or she just would love to exchange with the religion by her devout faith to achieve her goals. “You know we love you and I want to tell you for your own good how matters stand. Your father does not want to hamper your freedom. He thinks you should be allowed to drive the car. If you want to take some of the nice girls out riding with you, we are only too pleased. We want you to enjoy yourself.” (Soldier's Home, Hemingway). Some people deem that a mother’s love is a sort of human instinct. However, there are many pieces of news that have reported a fact that some parents abuse or even kill their sons and daughters. Therefore, it indicates that a mother or father’s love is also a sort of good quality instead of the so-called human instinct. His mother is kind and generous to Krebs. His mother knew that although her son had returned home from the battlefield, the war had caused him the trauma. She tried to comfort her son by the power of religion, and she believed in her lord’s strength in healing Krebs’s trauma. She believed that Krebs was supposed to try praying harder if his trauma could not be healed. Krebs’s mother did everything she could for her son in order to heal his disease. As a matter of fact, Krebs is no longer a child but an adult and he is bound to take the responsibility for himself. That is to say, Krebs’s mother does not have any obligation to take care of Krebs. However, his mother chooses to offer unconditional love and care to his son continually. Everyone lives only once, and she should enjoy the rest of her life. In fact, Krebs’s terrible situations negatively affect her own life. She sacrifices much of her time on other stuffs and devotes her faith to her religion. She wants to help her son get rid of those terrible days so as to discard the painful memories. She endures sadness for these stuffs. She also realizes that he does not love her, but she still chooses to give unconditional love and care to her precious son without any return.
Secondly, Sammy is a good person because of his helping others in the “A&P”. Sammy is bored and tired of his current situation. When three girls were accused by the manager out of their opposing the tradition, Sammy dared to stand out and defend for them. What Sammy did is to make a protest speech for the girls in order to show that he looks like a hero. Sammy dares to tell the truth. He is not like some other people who simply abide by the ancient tradition, but he dares to challenge the rules and to break the tradition. He quits his job and goes out of the supermarket. When he comes to the street, he does not see those beautiful girls while he sees married women and their children as a result. "I said I quit. You didn't have to embarrass them. It was they who were embarrassing us." (A&P, Updike). Sammy resigns his job for beautiful strangers. Some people may feel that his behavior is stupid and irrational, and he is indeed in fact. Obviously, he would like to draw attention from those bikini girls. The job is the only method to make a living. He does not hesitate to sacrifice his own resource of income to defend for those three girls. Those three girls’ clothes have a conflict with people’s value at that period so that some people may prefer to suppress views of minority that are different from their opinions. Moreover, this sort of people wants to control other people's ideas and life details, which is awful tyranny of the majority. Personally speaking, what kind of clothes these three girls want to wear is just their individual choices, and their options do not harm or negatively affect others’ benefits at all. Therefore, other people have no right to accuse them. The public should not interfere with each one's private life and individual choice. Each person cannot force and order others to follow his or her own morality. If a person's behavior does not harm the benefits of others, then society should not intervene in that person. It does not matter whether Sammy realizes this view of liberty or not, he does the same thing under this sort of view. He chooses to stand out defending for three girls instead of keeping silent. Sammy would like speak for those three girls, which depicts him to be a bravo and unsuspected hero.
Thirdly, Matt is a good person because of his self-sacrifice in “Killings”. Matt is a pitiful father, and his son Frank’s death undoubtedly destroys the harmony of Fowler’s family. Matt is increasingly drowned in depression, and he tries to avoid any chance to contact with others. When the murderer Richard is released, Matt and his family are quite angry at it. They decide to punish the murderer Richard in their own way. “I should kill him… He bit his lower lip, wiped his eyes, then said it again. Ruth’s arm, linked with Matt’s tightened; he looked at her. Beneath her eyes there was swelling from the three days she had suffered. She sees him all the time. It makes her cry. She knows I started carrying it after the first time she saw him in town. 38 I’ve had for years, I take to the store now...where he did something to me. Where I could get away with it”(Killings, Dubus). Matt tries to hide his sorrow for his son, which is right why he keeps silent and endures the suffering at his son’s funeral. Matt realizes that the law does not stand for him and his dead son Frank anymore. When the law is unfair to treat his innocent son and his family, Matt feels hopeless. Matt is angry at that, and he does not want to see his family still get suffering and feel painful because Richard gets away with impunity. Matt’s psychological struggle demonstrates his morality and hatred for the murderer Richard. However, his moral principle indicates that he cannot kill a person unless for self-defense. Between love and morality, Matt chooses love for family so that he makes up his decision to revenge himself on Richard. Matt and his friend Willis plan to kidnap and murder Richard, and he decides to keep this secret to his children. This behavior implies that he does not want his family feel scary all day out of his illegally killing Richard. Matt sacrifices himself and assumes all the risks and guilt if someone reports Richard’s death. Matt just wants to protect his family and keep them away from all sorts of consequences. Matt’s love is selfless for his family. From his perspective, family's happiness is more important than his own. In other words, Matt’s own happiness is based on the happiness of his family and his family's happiness is his own happiness.
To sum up, all the aforementioned three characters, Krebs’ mother, Sammy, and Matt, demonstrate all sorts of good qualities from different aspects. Or maybe it can be put in another way that this is the altruism that makes those people good people because they are willing to increase the survival of others and reduce their own survival. Although genes are selfish to survive, human emotions constrain this selfish nature from genes and instead make people perform purely altruistic behaviors such as donation and devotion to others.
