Gross domestic product, or GDP for short, is the market value of all final goods and services produced in a given period measured in a certain currency. GDP is a very useful measure because it is a single number that can be compared across different countries and different years. It is a simply way to see how each economy is doing and how much the economy has improved or contracted. There is also a measure called GDP per capita, GDP divided by the population in a given country, to measure whether the living standard in a country is high or low. Looking at a GDP indicator for many countries and many years together on one graph can allow the reader to discern when an economic expansion occurred and when a recession occurred.

There are many variations in measuring GDP. For example, you can classify GDP as real GDP and nominal GDP. Real GDP is nominal GDP adjusted for inflation. That is, we take out the effects and impacts caused by inflation and real GDP measures how much the economic really improved without other influential factors such as inflation. It is a more fair and accurate measure than nominal GDP because we can compare across countries to see how each economy is doing realistically.

GDP can usually be calculated in two ways: revenues to producers or income to the factors of production. Since both ways should yield roughly equivalent results, we can use both methods to calculate. The revenues to producer’s method is calculated as the sum of consumption, investment, government expenditures, and net exports. In that equation, net exports equal to the value of imports minus exports. The income to the factors of production method is calculated as Wages, salaries, and supplementary labor income, corporate profits, investment income, farmers’ income, and non-farm unincorporated business income.

One example of how I can use the information in the real world is I can see the GDP growth rate for every country in the world by downloading the data from the World Bank Database and I can compare which country advanced faster than average. The growth rate can be used to predict the future of a country and see which country has more potential to become stronger in the future and which country will develop slower in the future. Retrospectively, when a recession has occurred, we can analyse the GDP for every country and see which country was more severely impacted by the recession and we can use this information to further find out exactly why a certain a certain economic event occurred to prevent crisis in the future.
