Feminism is all the time a heated topic for the great majority of human beings and people’s opinions vary from one another on that. Generally speaking, feminism is a movement that is closely connected with the gender equality between males and females and those people that are in support of feminism can be called feminists. Though feminism took place in the past, it has been mentioned here and there in all kinds of media even today, such as movies, TV series, magazines, books, website news and so on. In this way, human beings in current times can also have the awareness about it so that they can form a correct perception toward the gender equality. The other day I have read a piece of news titled “Wives could be forced to legally provide for husbands in new Singapore government bill”, which also indicates something relevant to feminism.

In this news, it is stated that the females in Singapore have been allowed to have the rights to take the responsibility for the financial support of the whole household just like males. From this, we can have a fair knowledge that women’s rights have been guaranteed to some extent and they have gained some degree of protection from the outside society with the passage of time. In the past, females are regarded as inferior to males in one way or another and they cannot work outside to demonstrate themselves in that human beings hold that females are weaker than males and they are not able to deal with a series of troublesome work in the job market. Instead, what females need to do is to take charge of all kinds of family issues either small or large so that their husbands can work outside in the society without any rear worry. Or maybe it can be put in another way that females’ roles can be considered as an assistant of males and they cannot surpass males from the perspective of people at that time.

Also, the financial responsibility lies in males in the past and males are seen as the breadwinners for the whole household, while females are only playing a role in avoiding all the troubles of males as will appear in their daily life aspects. Therefore we can say that the females in Singapore being allowed to have the change for taking the financial responsibility for the whole household can be deemed as a new step for gender equality and there is progress made in gender equality more or less. These females can compete with males in the job markets and they can also strive for whatever they want through their own efforts. That is to say, these females in Singapore are actually the independent ones who can live quite wonderfully even if they are deprived of males and they can be as competent as males. Females are not used to be assistants for males anymore and they can fight for their own future in the society on their own.

Maybe we may hold that females and males in Singapore will be equal ever since from such tendency, what is a pity to say is that this news in the meantime emphasizes that the absolute gender equality cannot be achieved even at this moment. It is described that the patriarchal thinking still influence human beings in their daily life and not all people have formed the sense of gender equality. Some people still cannot imagine the scenes where females take the responsibility for the whole household due to their ingrained thoughts that males are superior to females and males are more powerful than females. Thus, there still has a long way to go for the coming of absolute equality between males and females.

As far as I am concerned, females and males are simply two equal groups of people and they can both be able to contribute to the society through their own efforts. Therefore both females and males should be given equal opportunities for whatever they are engaged in so that they can both make their own bit for the realization of a certain issue.
