IntroductionThis report is a brief proposal for my master dissertation, it aims to give a general look and guidance in my dissertation, and explain why and how to do the dissertation. This reports including 6 main part, academic context and background, research aim and objectives—I put them together, research method, research ethics, timescale and references at the end of the report.
This is a nascent work need to be complete during the whole process.
Academic context and background
My dissertation topic is to determine the influences that international festivals or cultural events bring to UK. Are these impacts good or not that good for both the original countries and UK, this is a problem that I need try to find out.
I noticed this topic since last year, a celebration event about Diwali Festival which is supported by student union of University of Surrey, took place in campus and gathered a number of non Indian people. This is my first time to know this festival and gain knowledge of Indian culture. After that, last month I went to London for the celebration of Chinese Spring Festival, it was great fun! Then I start to think that these kinds of international festivals or any other cultural events which take places in UK, and attract not only foreign people but also lots of residents.
Since a long time ago, the increase number of international immigration bring the different culture into UK society, as more people living outside their country of origin, the number and scale of celebrate these cultures will increase.(Bowding et al. 2006)
As Picard and Robinson said, in tourism and social aspects, the relationship between forms of festivals and social life crisis were not lack of analyses. However, the research can not ignore the appearance of festivals in relation to the contexts and the eras change (Picard and Robinson, 2006).
Recently years, an increasing number of international festival and cultural events took place in UK, for example: the lights show for Diwali Festival, the celebration for Chinese Spring Festival, and Edinburgh International festival. And Maslenitsa, a Russian festival which is to celebrate the winter ends will have a celebration at Trafalgar Square in 26th Feb this month.
A festival or event could be a human made tourist attraction, and bring the host city economic benefit. It is seem to be that the festivals always involve some form of social concentration and connectivity (Picard and Robinson, 2006 p10). For some cities, they want to develop their tourism by create attractive events, like Edinburgh International Festival, major cultural events have arguably become ‘brands’ in their own right (Greg Richards and Julie Wilson, 2003). By host a variety of cultural events in a year, offered not only the local visitors but also international tourists a choice of tourist attraction, and build a image of cultural and diversity (Prentice R and Anderson V, 2003).
Compared with natural scenery and historical tourist attraction, “It provides off-season benefits to the economy” (Jayswal T, 2008), this is the reason why increasing cities start to pay attention to the events, in order to release the negative impact of dull season.
The image building effect of events is another issue that should be noticed. A good image is a kind of positive promotion which maybe lead to a high volume of visit, The image transfer is considered when any benefit that tourist recognise in events becomes benefit for host destination (Meyvis, Janiszewski 2004 ).
Research aim and objectives
The research aim is to identify the influences that international festivals and cultural events bring to the UK as a destination where these events took place.
These influences might be build a specific image of the original country, or the birth places of the festivals, and also an effect of cross culture communication, make people know more about the different customs and culture., help to eliminate cultural bias. My research is try to find these problems, to see how people’s attitude to these events, do they intended to join them or dislike them. And how many people change their mind or gain knowledge of foreign culture through these events.
Furthermore, what the organizer think about these events, why they hose these kinds of events, to see their purpose.
While another impact or long term legacy is mainly based on how these events lead to a result of influence the general knowledge or may be customs and benefits in UK society.
Methods (including access)
In the whole process of my research, I will use a combination strategy including literature review, selecting case, secondary data and primary data as well.
In the beginning of my research, lots of reading is necessary. Critical review of is a way to have a good knowledge of research area (Saunders, 2009), review more literatures of relevant subjects will provide the knowledge foundation of my current research.
Then I will choose a case to do my further research, this case should be the one fit my basic research aim and easy to access. So far I have some cases in mind, e.g. the celebration of Chinese Spring Festival in UK.
In case it is possible to access, the student union organized a trip to London for the Spring Festival performances, and they kept all the contact email of the members who buy the tickets and to see the performances that day with student union.
I am thinking about talk to them for the email address to do the online survey, to see the attitude of different people towards the foreign festival. Another reason why I choose online survey is totally free of charge, and easy to control the volume.
My sample based on the people who has been attended International festivals or cultural events, it is better to link to my case.
Besides, as I was invited by a local friends who live in Guildford for a celebration of Chinese New Year in Guildford during the Christmas holiday, I kept the contact emails and face book pages of several organizer, it is possible to ask them for a interview as the view if organizer.
I also choose Maslenitsa Festival and Edinburgh International Festivals as back up cases.
Together with primary data by survey or interview, I will use secondary data at the same time. Then I am going to decide what I will use after the period of literature review.
As the methods which I am going to use in my research, I will take the ethic issues in mind.
Firstly, as I set up my research aim and research methods above, I am going to use some secondary data for those update news or academic journals and books, together with references to avoid the suspicion of plagiarism.
I will also use some primary data to see the attitude of people from different background towards the international festivals or cultural events.
Moreover, details of my research ethic may be finished later, after the lecture which will talk to this important issue.

As the time scale above, MB runs session on literature review at 5th March, and students are expected to submit draft literature review before 30 April. So this period is for me to do reading relevant literatures and review academic research.
MB runs session on designing and writing up methodology at 18 June, so I will do the design and pilot instrument around that time. The first stage is design the survey, questionnaire or/and interview, it is about 2 weeks for me to do that. Only after these are been well designed, the next step only could set up, then the third step is administer instrument. About the same time, set up the data file, once the data was collected and ensure the quality, the data could be entered and start to analyze by using the SPSS software. All of these are thought to be finished before 20 July.
The last stage is after analyzing the data, start to write up results, and make it integrated and critical.
Before the due date, a plenty of time was needed to finish the whole dissertation in a correct format. From 20 July to 7 Sep, I have about 50 days to do that.
