After comparing many aspects of pet name between English and Chinese, the article tries to find out the social factors that forming these differences. To a large extent, a local language reflects the local culture. As a carrier of culture, language also reflects a certain social relations. Analyzing the change and difference of pet name between English and Chinese from the perspective of social linguistics and understanding the cultural difference and connotation reflected behind the nickname have important and profound significance to English study and cross-cultural communication for us.
