The Politics of Passing 1964's Civil Rights Act was a record of a television interview between Terry Gross and an author Todd Purdum whose new book would be published. Focusing on the book, they talked about the general passage of the 1964’s Civil Rights Act. This interview is developed by time line and featuring significant figures in the process to emphasize the conflicts between advocates and opponents, compromises and resolutions in the senate and congress as well as the hard-won victory.
The demonstrations led by Martin Luther King ignited the issue. In the 1960s, President Kennedy sought a balance between diminishing racial discrimination and keeping other policies function, so he moved it forward but kept reservations. The bill was obtained strong opposition all the time from Congressman J. Edgar Hoover to later Chairman Smith of the Rules Committee. Johnson, in comparison with his predecessor, gave civil rights priority. He figured out a number of strategies to get it passed. In a fierce struggle within the Congress, the passage of the bill forged ahead with hardship and more provisions were added. This act reshaped modern American.
