The Statue of Liberty Michele Habermann Period 3 1/21/10 As the Statue of Liberty made its great journey from France to the United States, it brought along great symbolism to America. The statue was a gift from France in 1886 to commemorate the centennial of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Lady Liberty was to represent the friendship between France and America that was made during the American Revolution. Today the Lady stands for more than a friendship between France and America; it stood for freedom, liberty, and unification. After the attacks on the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001, Lady Liberty became an even greater symbol for our country. Apart from that tragic day, the Statue of Liberty stands for escaping oppression and tyranny. To the United States, Lady Liberty is our symbol of great pride. As it stands with grace, it tells a long historical story, and stands for freedom, liberty and emancipation of slaves, and power to our nation. In the first place, she stands at the entrance of New York harbor, a 151-foot statue of a woman holding a book and a torch on-high. "Liberty Enlightening the World" was a gift of friendship from the people of France to the United States to commemorate the 100th anniversary of American Independence. The Statue stands for freedom and a new beginning to our nation. She is one of the greatest sights to when visiting New York and America in general. After the September 11th terrorist attack, the Statue stands with even Habermann 2 more grace and power, which now has made citizens feel even more proud to be an American. As one of the most symbolic gestures of all time, the Statue of Liberty represents, freedom, liberty, justice and also the friendship of foreign nations who also believe in freedom and fair and equal treatment for all. The Statue stands with her arm held high and proud showing that we are a free nation and extremely strong when we unify together. She remains an enduring symbol of American freedom that people from the U. S. and abroad feel compelled to visit. Furthermore, the condition in which an individual has the right to act according to his or her own will is known as liberty. It is clearly stated in her name what she stands for, the Statue of Liberty. The statue gives clear hope to the country that the U.S. is a free nation, and no matter how many laws or amendments are made, the United States has liberty throughout its veins. Lady Liberty initially was inspired by French abolitionists with the intention of saluting Lincoln and the emancipation of the slaves. Its original intent, celebrating the end of slavery, was redirected by the politics of "race" towards the White "huddled masses" of Europe. The original meaning of the Statue of Liberty was corrupted by the deeply rooted racist ideology of American political leadership and its supportive ancestry. The idea of giving a colossal representation of republican virtues to a sister republic across the sea served as a focus for the republican cause against other politicians. Lady Liberty not only symbolizes liberty, but it tells the story of the emancipation of the slaves. Many people in the United States look to the Statue as a story Habermann 3 of their history, ancestry. There are so many stories to be told and symbols to see when taking a deep look at the Statue of Liberty. Therefore, the United States is one of the most powerful nations in the world. Being that the nation is very prestigious; the United States holds a very powerful statue in the New York Harbor, the Statue of Liberty. The Statue tells a greater story ever since the horrifying terrorist attack on September 11th. America united on that day, it seemed as if it were falling apart at the seems of greatness. However, just after one day, the nation came right back up standing on it’s feet, more powerful than ever. The United States is the most powerful nation in the world, technologically and strength wise. The nation is extremely strong and has shown that they can pull through just about anything and still come out on top. On that tragic day, many people turned to the Statue for hope, that one day we as a nation would pull through this, united. Consequently, the United States of America is greatly stated in one symbol of it all, the Statue of Liberty. She holds her arm high with power, liberty and emancipation, and freedom to the nation. The Statue has an extremely long and flourished history that tells her tale of beauty and grace. "Liberty Enlightening the World" was a gift of friendship from the people of France to the United States to commemorate the 100th anniversary of American Independence. The Statue stands for freedom and a new beginning to our nation. She is one of the greatest sights to when visiting New York and America, one of the most powerful nations today.
