Introduction
* This document describes the factors/variables considered when designing a Material Handling System. Introduce the characteristics, advantages and disadvantages, appropriate applications for the pallet trucks, side loaders, power roller conveyers and overhead chain conveyers. And discuss the latest trends and technologies for Material Handling System and Management.

The factors/variables considered when designing a Material Handling System.
* When designing the material handling system, facility layout, product routings, and material flow control must be considered.
1) Facility layout: The facilities layout is to minimize the movement, handling and shipping distance of the material and labour by optimum locating equipment, people, materials, base installation and the point of data collection meanwhile improve the overall productivity.
2) Product routings: A Product Routing is the list of the operations that must be carried out, and the time required for each operation, in order to make a product. Each operation is carried out at a Work Centre and hence the Product Routing describes the route that a product follows as it travels from work centre to work centre across the factory floor.
3) Material flow control: The task of Material Flow Control is communication with the material handling equipment from the Host or Warehouse Management System to the shop floor.
Describe the characteristics, advantages and disadvantages, appropriate applications
1) Pallet trucks
Characteristics:
The structure of pallet truck is simple, flexible control, fretting, and explosion - proof characteristics of high performance.
Advantages
It’s very applicable to loading and unloading of pallets in high rack warehouse, workshop equipment when the channel is narrow or the work space is limited.
Disadvantages
It cannot carry the excess weight goods.
Appropriate applications
It can be widely used in chemical, paint, coal, textile, war industry, pharmaceutical, petroleum, pigments and other industries, as well as warehouses, freight yards, railways, ports, and contains an explosive mixture of places, entering the cabin, and carriage for pallet cargo and container handling, stacking and handling.
2) Side loaders
Characteristics:
It can control the lateral discharging in many directions.
Advantages:
It is suitable for tunnel excavation and narrow area. It not need to make a turn, greatly reduce the work time and improve the working efficiency.
Disadvantages:
The capacity of this loader is small.
Appropriate applications:
Widely used in the construction site, ports, docks, stations to shovels or short transport fertilizers, sand, coal and other loose material.
3) Powered roller conveyors

It can transport bulky and heavy packages.
Advantages:
They provide fast, safe and cost-effective means of continuously feeding materials into building site mixers and machinery.

4) Overhead chain conveyors
Characteristics:
Transmission capacity of a single machine is great and can use long line to achieve cross conveyance in different factory. The structure of this conveyor is simple, high reliability and can be used in all kinds of bad environment.
Advantages:
It can make a turn、climbing and adapting various geographical conditions. This conveyor is law at cost and energy consumption, it can greatly reduce use cost.
Disadvantages:
It cannot contact with acid or alkali. And its drive device, electrical equipment should be avoided to blow, touch, fall and violent shaking and impact.
Appropriate applications:
It is widely used in large or mass production factory. It has the wide range of applications in home appliance, clothing, slaughtering, postal and other aspects.

With the development of modern logistics, the trend and technologies of material handling system and management will be like below:
1) Become more practical and light-duty
Material handling equipment is applied in general occasion, therefore it can reduce its appearance height, simplify structure, reduce cost, also can reduce the operation of equipment costs at the same time.
2) Become more customization and generalization
The logistics activity is systematic, consistent, economic, and mobility, require some equipment to specialization development, some material handling equipment to generalization, standardization.
3) Become more automatic and intelligent
Let the Material handling technologies Combined with many high technologies to achieve that goal
4) Wholly and systematized
When the logistics system completes sets of equipment and matching, logistics system is the most effective and economy.
