SPRING BREAK ISSUES WOMEN FACE IN AMERICA Media Reaction Paper Spring Break Issues Women face In America SPRING BREAK ISSUES WOMEN FACE IN AMERICA Ho, Claudine. (2011, February 10). The Sketchiest Spring Break in America. Seventeen, Vol. 70. No. 3, 172-175. This article outlined several issues that young adults face while attending spring break vacation parties. One location in particular, Panama Beach City, Florida, houses the craziest spring break vacation in America. Some of the issues that many young women have encountered are issues, with aggressive men, poor atmosphere, and the lack of respect for women. This paper will focus on my views on spring break, the credibility of this article, and the type of audience this article targets. Prior to reading this article, I have had no previous experience going to a spring break vacation party. I have heard many positive and negative stories about these outrageous vacations; however, none of the stories have convinced me to attend. This article confirmed my view towards spring break issues. Majority of the positive stories that I have heard come from men, and the negative stories come from females. Many of my male friends tell me about how much fun it is and all the girls you can get attending this type of event. On the other hand, I have heard many stories about men disrespecting women, and treating them like they are toys. This article confirmed to me that spring break is more for men to have fun and use women for their own pleasure because it focused only on the issues women face. I believe this article contained a significant amount of credibility. Due to the fact that this article was included in a girl’s magazine, the real-life horror stories were all from women. These true stories that were told by women proved the credibility of the information presented in the article. For instance, rather than listing the types of issues spring break has for women, the article allowed women to tell their stories in detail to the reader. This includes a story about an eighteen year old girl named Tuesday who described her encounters with men. She had an incident where she and her friend were in a hotel room with several men, and they almost forced them to have SPRING BREAK ISSUES WOMEN FACE IN AMERICA sex with them. The information contained in the article delivered all that the title promised, because it went into more into depth, containing real-life stories. The topic was promoted by including several pictures of the chaos including a picture on the title page of several men and women, who were all partying with alcohol in their bathing suits. Several of these pictures reflected the different stories of the women by using the picture as an example of what it looked like during their experience This article focused only on educational value. It emphasized the fact that spring break is not what it seems from the outside. It provided advice for women to follow such as using the buddy system, reading hotel reviews, and to not rely on cell phones. It educated the reader by not only by providing real life stories, but it portrayed spring break as being negative. There was not one positive thing about spring break included in this article. For instance, this article included a paragraph about a man named Shawn Wuertley. Shawn was a bodyguard, and he raped a young girl and tried to strangle her. She tried to escape; however, he ended up throwing her off the hotel balcony. Miraculously she lived, and he was sentenced to 35 years in prison. The information on Shaw Wuerltley was also posted on various Panama Beach newspaper articles, in which this proved the validity of the author’s credentials. Due to the fact that this article was in a female’s article, the tone of the article was focused only on women. There was an attitude towards women, and a negative attitude towards men. This article was definitely biased especially because the stories included in this article were all about women and their negative experience with men. For instance this article’s introductory sentence said, “Guys lean out of their car windows along the main drag, shouting at girls to hop in and tossing beads at them if they flash their breasts”. Another example is a story about a girl walking around in which she describes her surroundings, “I was scared that the guys would try to take advantage of me”. SPRING BREAK ISSUES WOMEN FACE IN AMERICA Even though I have heard many stories from my friends about spring break, this article confirmed that it is not something that I would want to partake in. I think that attending spring break is for those who want to have a good time with females, however, articles like this paint a negative picture on men. There are several men that are not like the men portrayed in the stories told by women in this article. As a result, many men might be stereotyped as being someone they aren’t. After reading this article, you can’t help but to feel sorry for the women in these stories.
