Sports Are Fun And Entertaining
I am a person that takes sports very seriously in my life. I enjoy playing sports as much as I like watching them on television. I think we live in area that has a long history of sports and many traditions and customs that go along with it. By living in Lansing my entire life I have been able to experience and appreciate the history and legacy that our sports teams have offered for so many years. This is why I believe sports in society today can be entertaining to watch and also fun to play for both men and women.
I want to find out if people have the same thoughts and opinions that I do about sports. I want to see if men take sports more seriously than women do, or if there is a lot more women involved then we think. I want to find out what sports men and women like to play and watch and compare the results to each other. I want to find out which sports are the most popular overall by men and women. I want to find out how men and women react when watching a sporting event on television, or in person. I want to see if they get really excited during the game, or if they just sit there and watch closely.
The three research methods I used to help me were: surveys, interviews and observations. I thought that these methods would be the most beneficial in finding out most of the answers to all of my questions. I made a survey of ten questions related to sports. Before I handed out my surveys I predicted that men would probably be more involved in sports than women are. I think that men watch a lot more sports on television than women do, and take sports more seriously. I predict that football will be the most popular sport overall to watch for both men and woman. I think that football and baseball will be the most popular sports to play for males, whereas females will choose sports like softball and volleyball as their favorite to play. I also think that men get more excited and more involved when watching their favorite sporting event than women do. I think for the most part that males are more knowledgeable about sports than females are. I handed my surveys out to ten of my friends and people that I know from work because I wanted to see how they compared to me personally. I wanted to get an equal mix of male and female responses, so I chose five male and five females to take the survey. I explained to them that I was conducting a survey to see how they felt about sports and what types of sports they liked to play and watch. I asked them to take the survey seriously because I would be writing an essay from the data that I collected. Since the survey only took less than a minute to fill out, everyone was very cooperative of doing it.
After reviewing the results of the ten surveys, I concluded that mostly everyone does like sports at least to some extent. All of the men and women that I surveyed said that they do watch sports on television. I also concluded that men said that they do like sports more than women, and that men do get more excited when watching their favorite sports. Football seemed to be the most favorite sport to watch on television for both men and women. This did not surprise me because I know that mostly all men are interested in football because of the physical play and intensity, and women enjoy watching football because it is exciting and they like to check out the football players. The favorite sport for men differed from what women like to play. Men seemed to choose sports like football, baseball, and basketball. Women chose less physical sports like softball, volleyball, and tennis.
I concluded that men have been to more sporting events than women have. This was no surprise to me because men are normally involved in sports than women are, so they are willing to pay to go and see their favorite teams more often. On my survey I asked the question do you think that sports are primarily for males. All of the females except for one answered no to this question, and four out of five males answered yes. I do not agree with this because I think that both men and women should have the equal right to participate in whatever sport they want. I think that all of these results could have been different if I would of surveyed more than ten people and asked more in depth questions. Overall I thought the answers that I did get were accurate enough to support my thesis and predictions that I made. I conducted two interviews, one to my friend Brandon and one to my girlfriend Nicole. The questions that I asked them were more in depth than the questions on my surveys. These questions gave them the opportunity to go into more detail when answering. Brandon said that he likes sports because they are entertaining to watch and fun to play, and a good way to meet new people. He said that he enjoys bowling the most because he can play anytime, and it challenges his mind. He played basketball in high school and he still plays in his free time. He watches football, basketball and baseball on television. His favorite sport to watch on television though, is football because it’s the most exciting and every game counts. He said that he likes to watch sports with friends, and that he normally stays calm when watching them. He has been to many professional sporting events like football and basketball. He likes the local hometown teams and teams with the popular players. Nicole likes sports very much also. She played volleyball in high school but does not play any sports now. Her favorite sports to watch on television are football, women’s volleyball, and women’s college basketball. She said that she enjoys watching the sporting events with her friends and her boyfriend, which is myself. She has been to a couple of professional sporting events, and she said that she gets very nervous and excited when she watches football. She likes the local hometown teams, and the teams that have purple uniforms.
I conducted an observation of how men and women act while watching the Michigan, and Michigan State men’s college basketball game. I conducted the observation at the breslin center in east Lansing. I watched to see how men and women reacted towards the game. I noticed that the men acted more excited and pumped up when Michigan state scored a basket. The men also acted more pissed off and said a lot more swear words when the referees made a bad call. The men also gave each other a lot of high fives and hand slaps when a big play happened. I noticed when Michigan lost the game the Michigan fans were very upset. The men criticized each others team and said they sucked. I think that men act more of a sore loser than women do because of their competitive nature.
After conducting all of my primary research, I can conclude that both men and women do think sports are entertaining and fun to watch. I think that there are a lot of women who do like sports, but I think that men take sports more seriously. Women might take sports more seriously if the sports world becomes more female dominant, instead of having mostly all male professional sport teams. I think that a majority of men are more knowledgeable then women when it comes to sports. But I do know a lot of guys who know nothing about sports, and girls who know a lot. I think sports provide a good source of entertainment for both males and females because there are so many to choose from.
In conclusion I think I have a better understanding of what sports men and women like to play and watch, and how they feel towards them. After conducting ten surveys, two interviews, and an observation I have found out that mostly everyone does like at least one sport in some way. Mostly everyone does agree that sports are entertaining and fun to participate in. overall I thought that the research to support my thesis went well because I did not come across any problems. Everyone was very cooperative when I collected my data. I thought this was a fun experiment because I had a chance to see how men and women compared when it came to sports.
