Today I would like to talk to you about the withdrawal of NATO troops from Afghanistan. This report is specifically aimed at the government and to those who are clueless about what is happening behind the scenes in Afghanistan. Today I will be focusing on the following topics; firstly the war has caused great suffering for the afghan people, secondly the war appears to be unwinnable due to years of fighting between Afghanistan and rival countries and thirdly the war has resulted in injury and death for Australian soldiers and is loosing popular support.
It has been claimed the war has had inflicted great suffering upon the afghan people. It is estimated that between 2006 and june 2010 nearly 7000 Afghan civilians have died as a result of fighting. These civilians clearly do not deserve to die as they are innocent and harmless. The NATO troops should feel ashamed of their service, these are people these are human beings. Guilt should be the only feeling they have within themselves every time they see and elderly man struggle and watch him die. And every time they see a mother and her children scream worse than saddams as they force her out of her home.
We as a nation were told that these troops are fighting terrorists but the only terrorist I see is these troops and their occupation is terrorism. The Guardian on August 10, 2010 stated, ‘Civilian casualties in Afghanistan are getting worse, according to the latest statistics from the United Nations: the Taliban’s increasing use of home made bomb and political assassination has been responsible for a 31% increase in the number of civilians were killed or injured in fighting in Afghanistan this year..’ the only thing we should be hearing is a decrease in killings and injuries, not an increase. This needs to stop, mothers, fathers, children are dieing daily and we sit back and allow it, we need to come together as a nation and make a change and let the people who are behind this hear our voices.
It has been claimed that children who live in Afghanistan are particularly affected every day by a multitude of wartime stressors which contribute to their developing post traumatic stress disorder: child labour, and family and military violence. On a dialy basis they are first-hand witnesses to the bombings, abuse, and the general upheaval of their homelife and society. Approximately half od the boys and a third of the girls are expected to work to supplement the familys income, sometimes working heavy labor jobs as carpet weavers for an average of seven hours a day. Girls in this situation were more likely to experience family violence. Why has the government imposed great suffering on people who are already facing suffering' All I see when I look at these Afghan civilians is eyes wandering for peace and tranquility..
It has been repeatedly claimed that the war in Afghanistan is unwinnable. This point was made by the leader of the Greens, senator Bob Brown, who in an interviews on the ABC’S 7:30 report on October 18 2010, stated that, ‘ we have Australian experts who point out that the war cannot be successful, not on any current trajectory, in terms of a victory and the quelling…of opposition from the Taliban in Afghanistan.’ Now ask yourself what is the point of an unwinnable war'
It has been over 10 years, the only progress ive seen is an increase in the death of Afghan civilians and the troops them selves. This war is a hopeless war where there isn’t and exit strategy. Neither Australia nor the United states believe the war in winnable in an absolute sense and that what each Government is seeking is an acceptable way to exit the country.
In an opinion piece that has been published in the age on September 2, 2010, Daniel Flitton stated, ‘ wining in Afghanistan implies. establishing stable democracy, ensuring respect for women’s rights and the rule of law, and getting rid of the drug trade, things the west used to talk about. Those goals are gone. That the reason Gillard ducks any question on whether it’s a winnable war. She prefers a different formula- that Australia has a clear and defined mission and progress is being made. In this sense a win in Afghanistan is better understood as finding the right way for the west to get out. Our mission now is to leave’ Daniel clearly states the downturn that is happening in Afghanistan and how no progress is actually being made. It is time that this war comes to and end without any questions asked.
The increasing number of fatalities and injuries suffered by Australian troops in Afghanistan has led many to question whether this is a war Australia should ever have entered or should continue to be part of. The lack of a clear objective and the growing loss of Australian lives have seen support for Australians involvement in this war dwindle. A recent survey that was taken by current affair questioning if Aussie troops should come home had a result of 2360 agreeing and 301 disagreeing.
It has been a terrible couple of weeks as their have been four deaths of Australian troops, bringing the total of number of troops killed their to 27. Racism is a vital weapon employed by this government; it is a more important weapon than a rifle, a tank, a bomber, or a battleship; it is more destructive than an artillery shell, or a bunker buster, or tomahawk missile. While all those weapons are created and owned by this government, they are harmless without people willing to use them.
Those who send us to war, do not have to pull the trigger, or lob a mortar round; they do not have to fight the war, they merely have to sell the war. They need a public who's willing to send their soldiers into harm's way. They need soldiers who are willing to kill and be killed, without question... They can spend millions on a single bomb, but that bomb only becomes a weapon, when the ranks of the military are willing to follow orders to use it.
They can send every last soldier anywhere on Earth, but there will only be a war, if soldiers are willing to fight.. And the ruling class, the billionaires who profit from human suffering, care only about expanding their wealth, controlling the world economy. Understand that their power lies only in their ability to convince us that war, oppression, and exploitation is in our interest.
They understand that their wealth is dependent on their ability to convince the working class to die, to control the market of another country, and convincing us to kill and die, is based on their ability to make us think that we are somehow superior. Our soldiers have nothing to gain from this war, but only suffer more from it, they lose limbs, endure trauma and give their lives. Our families have to watch flag-draped coffins lowered into the earth. That is the last thing a family would want, especially when the Government continues to send soldiers.
So in conclusion NATO troops should offcicaly bee withdrawn from Afghanistan as there is no benefit from it what so ever. The great suffering of Afghani civilians is increasing at a dramatic rate and should finally come to an end, as the death of innocent civilians should no longer occur. The war does seem to be unwinnable, this should be taken into consideration by the Governemnt and should be dealt with, as there is a great increase in the deaths of Australian Troops and majority of Australians want them sent home.
