New Beginnings
Nicole Richie has definitely come along from where she originally started. She has done a complete 180! We cant forgot her past struggles with depression even as she moves forward. We saw some of the key symptoms of depression such as malnourishment, substance abuse and difficulty concentrating through Nicole. The specific type of therapy used for Ms. Richie, would definitely have to the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. By looking deeper into the source of the problem and discovering her mindset, we work her through treatment.
Nicole Camille Escovedo was born on September 21, 1981. At the age of three she began to live with Lionel Richie because her birth parents couldn’t rightfully provide for her. In Kindergarten, she attended The Buckley School in Oaks Sherman where she met her them best friend Paris Hilton. She was official adopted by the Richies at the age of nine. Although this might have seemed like a dream come true, for Nicole, this not the case. Lionel and Brenda were constantly on the rode leaving Nicole to basically raise herself. Also during this time, talks of Lionel’s affair was beginning to surface. This divorce was so highly publicized that Lionel felt the need to indulge Nicole’s every whim “Their way of making me happy was to say yes to everything I wanted, but I don't think a little girl should have that much freedom,” said Nicole in a Vanity Fair interview ("Biography," 2006). They felt that the only way to make her happy was to say yes to every want and need.
Nicole was never truly ale to express herself to she began to conceal her problems through the usage of marijuana, cocaine, and heroin. She was caught driving on a revoked license and possession on heroin. After this, she went to rehab and sobered up. During this time, she was finally able to talk to her parents about her drug addiction problems, and what she was going through emotionally ("Richie reveals childhood," 2004). The true root of the issue had been dug and she no longer felt the need to use the drugs.
In 2003 She co-starred in the Simple Life with then best friend Paris Hilton. The show did amazing pooling in almost over 13 million viewers for the premiere episode. Sadly, after five prosperous seasons, the show came to a steady decline. While the show was coming to its close, Nicole became engaged to Adam Golstien ( A.K.A Dj AM) but the pair split 10 months after their engagement. 2006 was a rough year for Nicole, she was in and out of tabloids like crazy. Richies weight was way down. Many began to speculate that anorexic. Although she firmly denied all counts, she was aware that there was a problem, “It upsets me. I know I’m too thin right now, so I wouldn’t want any young girl looking at me and saying, ‘That’s what I want to look like’. I’m not happy with the way I look right now” ("Biography," 2006). Seeming to spriral right back on the wrong path, Nicole was busted with a DUI on Dec 11 of that year. In 2007, she began a healthy relationship with the now father of her children Joel Madden. Things began to look better for Richie during the course of their relationship. She gave birth to a beautiful baby Harlow in January 2008. The birth of her daughter changed her whole perspective on life. “Everything I do, I think about how it will benefit her…I stop doing things for me anymore… Everything is for her” (Mock, 2009). Madden and Richie had their second child, Sparrow, in September 2009. This couple recentely became in engaged. Nicole seems to happy and far better off.
At one point, this young starlit struggled with depression. Depression is the manifestation of someone feeling extremely sad, hopeless, worthless or pessimistic. Some of the many symptoms include fluctuation of appetite (weight lose or weight gain), substance abuse and feelings of helplessness. It all began with he absence of her father, Lionel, throughout her childhood. She used drugs to cope with these feelings of helplessness. She was also depressed with the extremely public split her parents had undergone and experimenting with drugs became a way of escape for Nicole. She felt that she wouldn’t have to deal with any of these issues. Shortly after she split from her then best friend Paris Hilton, Nicole began to drop a serious amount of weight. She was never really able to open up about her feelings so instead her depression led her to stop eating and loose a lot of weight. Her next attempt to cope with her issues was her relationship with Joel which was the first door for a brighter future for Nicole. The birth of her baby girl and he new found beau helped to quickly pull her put of the downward spiral. Although many might say that the baby alone turned her around, but , without Joel she would still be continuing down a rugged path.
Cogitive therapy would e the best for Nicole because it would alter her though process and slowly help her learn to cope with her issues using a much more positive outlet. She would also learn to discuss the issues that led to the depression. Cognitive Behavioral therapy explores the thought process of a patient while also trying to change that thought process and leading them on to a better future. Studies show that Cognitive Therapy has a 76% of success rate ("Cognitive-behavioral therapy," 2007). Also, this type of therapy will be more successful because its Inductive Method that changes the thought process of the patient while asking rational questions to redirect the thoughts. During this process, Nicole would slowly start rationalize her actions/ feelings and stop reacting in such a negative manner. I would also recommend she re-channel her energy into a more positive outlet.
Nicole is looking a lot better and seems like she is a lot happier. She had definitely has learned to re-channel her negative energy. The number one thing on her mind right now is family and it doesn’t seems like anything could change that.
