Task 4
In this task I am going to explain in depth two ways in which an individuals’ quality of life is affected by ill-health. There are four factors that affect ill-health; these are physically, intellectually, emotionally and socially. The two that I have chosen to explain in depth are emotional and social.
I am firstly going to explain the emotional factors that can affect ill-health. A person can be affected mentally which can be as bad as being physically ill. This can be seen worse because of the state of mind that someone ill will be , this can be affected in a number of ways, for example, when someone is off work or off school because they have a head ace or are feeling sick the usual things that they would do is either stay in bed, come down stair and lay on the sofa with their quilt watching tele, and it is known that when staying off for a few days the mental state of you feels bored from watching tele and not doing that much, they would end up having feelings of helplessness. But this can be seen more life changing when have a terminal illness for example. This is because when someone has had a serious accident and are having to stay in bed for a umber of months helplessness can e a major part of emotional affects that they will have, this is because the normal every day activities that they would have done when having there full mobility would have changes dramatically, like not being able to go to the toilet, cooking them selves a meal and doing there own house cleaning and shopping. The feeling that they will get is helplessness as they feel they have to relay on others, and have never had to relay on people this much before.
When feeling helpless, there can then be an affect of frustration and depression. The person will fell like this because when their not being able to do anything for their selves they will feel frustrated and angry at them selves. another way someone could feel frustrated at the fact that people always are doing things for them and not giving them a chance to try and do things for them selves, but on the other hand when someone has suffered from a serious accident like a heart attack then people may have to do more things for them like doing the shopping and cleaning the house. There could be depression that could form when being ill, as an example when someone is ill and they are either not allowed to get out of bed or they can’t get out of bed and they are so bored and not able to do anything there can come down with depression, this is also known as an illness on it’s own with out the illness or disease they already have. Depression can be an illness that takes a long time to get over. There are many different ways it can affect people, it can effect there social life and family life, in emotional ways it can effect someone are by, having continuous low moods and sadness, feelings of hopelessness and helplessness, low self-esteem, feeling guilty, tearfulness and lack of enjoyment. There are so many for effects it can give someone and it can make it feel even worse when they are already ill with something any way.
A person may lack confidence as they have had to depend on everyone else for a large amount of time, for example when eventually someone who is ill is recovering, they may feel unconfident because they now have to relay on them selves to do all the day to day activities we all do in our lifestyle. Like cooking, this is something if people want to eat healthy they need to know a basic understanding of cooking their own meals. Also they could lack confidence when copping with the illness, this could be because they have no confidence that they are going to get better so they give up on them selves, or they have no confidence that the specialists can do anything to help them, this can effect the way the patient thinks and can make them feel depresses and think of all the bad things can may happen instead of thinking about the positives and that their going to come through the other end of the disease or illness.
There could be an element of money worries towards the person who is dealing with a disease or illness. This is because when they are ill for a long period of time they can have the risk of losing their job, but for a short period of time they care able to get sick pay from the employer but this doesn’t happen for a large amount of time. So this then means the ill person either get’s no money or to then relay on benefits from the government, but with some benefits they aren’t enough to live off, so this will then mean that people with an illness will have a more poor quality of life that they will had to adapt to with the amount of money they get. A person that is ill may think too much about the amount of money they are spending with some of the medication that they are taking which cost money and they thought of not taking the medication because it will save money but on the other hand they will become more ill and suffer with the illness.
When someone is ill they may feel isolated, this may be because they can’t move or aren’t allowed out side or on the other hand feel isolated with the same people they are around all the time as they are looking after them but the person who is ill feels there around to much and it ends up being to much for them and making them depressed and unhappy.
Fear and anxiety can be a major effect when someone is ill, the reasons for this is because of the negative thought that will go through their head about the illness and all the bad effect that will happen when something goes wrong or the medication aren’t taking effect on the illness. Types of fears that will go through someone’s mind for example are when the person who is ill has family and they are serially ill and they have the fear of dieing and leaving them. Also an effect of fear is also when going to the doctors ad have not a fear of needles for example, there are many people hat have a fear of needles and that is one of the reasons why some don’t go to the doctors and get examined.
In the effects that people have emotionally there is the factor of ambitions and aspirations, these can be lost as a result of the illness, or the ambitions will be changes by the effect of the illness. This could be for example to walk up Everest, but has been in an accident and is now in a wheel chair this the means their ambitions have to change because of the effects the accident had.
The next way in which an individual’s quality of life can be affected by ill health is a social effect. The social effects that can see a change when someone is ill is by a number of ways, these could be social exclusions, lack of social life, physical barriers, strain on relationships, lack of opportunity to meet new people, lack of money for activities and friend’s ‘move on’. The first effect of the social factor I am going to explain is social exclusion. This is a major effect that accurse when someone is ill for a long period of time, as first their friends and family do as many activities as they can that will include them but after a few weeks they then drift away and do activities and go to social parties with out them as there are some things they wont be able to do. The other reason is because the persons friends will need to transport them around and this will put pressure on the group of friends. When someone is ill and they are unable to go out, this then means there will immerge a lack of social life will. A social life can be a major part of someone’s emotion as the social life of someone is were they make friend and have arguments and make ups which is a way of life when having friends, if the social life of someone who is ill ends, it makes them feel sorry for them selves and are always feeling down. Also this key’s in with intellectual effects, this is by socialising with friends and picking up knowledge about different subjects that are talked about while together and this will have a big effect on what information they know either about the general society and world or the neighbourhood where they live.
Physical barriers are a large issue when ill, when being ill and the illness affecting the physical ability to move this can put a lot of pressure on the ill people and the members of their family; it can also affect friendships between friends. This is because there is a huge relies on them to move them around to do the general tacks that everyone has to do everyday like using the toilet and having a wash. This can put pressure on friends and certain members of family as it isn’t something that would really happen, by helping them so much ain some ways. This also goes with stain on relationships in a social effect, so the reasons I have explained and also, when someone is ill that someone is friends with, in experience the way they talk to the ill friend in a different way, for example in a pity way and this could put strain on a relationship with friends because they get sick of there friends taking pity on them, when they just want to be treat normally. In a relationship can also cause strain between the two of them as the partner that is well may have not wanted to be in a situation like this, especially in an early stage of the relationship or if they are a young couple.
When not being in a social group and not getting out and meeting new people there could be a lack of opportunity both with getting a job in the future or meeting new people this can affect someone future in a large was as there way be a lack of options when they become healthier and able to work. Also it will be difficult for this people to meet people when they start going out again because of the lack of socialising when they are ill. Another example it if this person was in to a lot of sport then began with an illness tat effected there sporting activities so they had to stop, by they missed out in a lot opportunity that came up to become professional but they weren’t able to and it was a one in a life time opportunity. This could have a really big affect on meeting new people and having a future in what they really enjoyed.
When someone is out of work because of an illness they may then resort to going on to benefits, but the amount of money they get from the government is sometimes not enough to be able to get involved with activities and s this means lack of getting involved with different groups of people so they feel more excluded as there are activities that can’t be available to them because they can’t afford to attend and get involved. There is a large majority of people with an illness that have the problem of having their friends ‘move on’ this can effect all aspects of individuals quality of life which can be affected by ill health, so physically, intellectually, emotionally, socially. This is because with nit having friends around you don’t talk to anyone to get the information from around the area and they won’t have the knowledge what others there age has because they aren’t hearing about the important news in the country. Emotionally it can make the ill person feel depressed and not worth anything so they don’t fight the illness they are battling. Also physically it can make them think there’s no point in trying to walk again for example. And it affects them socially as they have no one to talk to except family and carers.
All these affects can have a major change to how people who are ill feel and act. So to be able to keep someone motivated to wanting to get better all these have to play a part to make them feel like they are worth something.
