Functions of Management Abraham Fetalvero University of Phoenix Kathy Pennington MGT 330 In today’s modern world organizations are expanding rapidly. People are more willing to take the risks and opportunities as far as ideas are concerned turn into reality, and make a fortune out of it. Management and its function is ideally performed in daily lives for the success of every organization and business companies. They are found every day and everywhere in the government, private companies, communities, and other institutions. Management is a foundation in every business organization that brought people together to mission, accomplish goal, and objectives. It is a social process that involves responsibility for economic and effective planning of a given purpose, consisting of various elements and activities that differ from functions of each manager on the level of his or her status. “The term management refers to group of people involved in the four general functions such as: planning, organizing, leading, and controlling” (Bateman & Snell, 2009). These functions are integrated throughout the organization on how the functions of management are carried. Every organization has goals, whether for profit, nonprofit, for growth, or combinations of these. Management of an organization can achieve and succeed in their goals through the use of the four functions. “Planning is the conscious, systematic process of making decisions about goals and activities that an individual, group, work unit, or organization will pursue in the future” (Bateman & Snell, 2009). This relates to my job. Planning is a way of becoming successful in daily performance as a manager. It is a process of what, why, how you’re deciding what to do, and how to go about doing it. This is a very important step to identify goals, objectives, methods, responsibilities, completion dates, and what an organization can do specifically. Planning is like a calendar, which includes deadlines for any taking or projects. Its purpose is to provide directions to managers and non-managers, and allow individual circumstances for any changes. In some cases, some employees take matters in their own hands to accomplish their organization's goals. It is the manager’s job to respond to develop goals and plan accordingly. Planning is important for the determination, whether plan and goals are met, without planning it is difficult to meet organizational goals. Organizing is the second function of management. This is an organization's structure to find the positions of the employees for the accomplishment of a specific job or purpose. In the military, for our personnel to determine who is the chain of command, ranks, and specific jobs. In the chart depicts important structure and designs. Organization structure has tow concepts such as: differentiation and integration. “Differentiation composed of different units working that work on different kinds of tasks, using different skills and work methods” (Bateman & Snell, 2009). This is highly important for organizations with many subunits and different kinds of specialties. “Integration is when the differentiated units are put back together so that work is coordinated into an overall product” (Bateman & Snell, 2009). Some managers consider issues of integration because most tasks cannot be performed independently. Integrations have a coordination concept to link various parts of the organization to achieve the mission. Leading is the third function of management involving working with people to accomplish organization goals. Leading effectively is the essential component for the success of an organization, like a military. Leading is important so employees work together effectively to achieve company goals. A good leader will lead to an organization's success. It is an important behavior for the improved and better organizational performance. Management leadership reflects actions of employees in the organization. Leaders should have the knowledge, and know how to lead and manage. Not all managers are a leader, and some employees in the executive level are not leaders. They can perform their job without leading; however, this position will afford an opportunity for a leadership role. Controlling is the fourth function of management, directing activities of individuals toward the achievement of organization goals. The function of controlling is to monitor, compare, and correct performance technically related to planning, how managers are effective to ensure activities are set as planned. There are four steps in the control process such as: setting performance standards, measuring performance, comparing performance against standards, and taking action to correct the problem. Control in the organization is needed for the effective management, but ineffective control will cause damage to an organization that sometimes will lead to employee's action to leave or under perform. Control in an organization will result in the management objective and goal to attain. It is necessary to carry plans and strategies to ensure plans are implemented. These control processes mentioned above will lead to a well-organized organization. In conclusion, the function of management is an important tool for an organization to function properly and effectively. These management functions and processes, is a system for an organization to be efficient, which is demonstrated in the current business organization evident in the world today. Without the use of effective management an organization will not succeed. Reference Bateman, T.S., & Snell, S.A. (2009).
