Evolution of Formal Organizations
Over the years, formal organizations have evolved in the sense of increased technology. A century ago there were no computers, cell phones, and other forms of technological communication available to connect people across the world or in local business environments. For generations businesses operated in a traditional fashion where it was pretty much hands on hard labor and when they needed to address a situation or pass along a change in business they had to communicate face to face in meetings or in writing which caused these companies to be less efficient compared to those who were evolving with the changing times of technology. Technology such as computers, cell phones, and other forms of communication coming into play made it more convenient for those at the top of the chain of command to spread the word to employees and or partnering companies of what was going on within the company. Formal organizations function within a chain of commands in order to remain structured and relevant in a constantly changing business world. As time goes on more and more formal organizations are becoming more flexible because of the diverse cultures that are continuously joining major corporations and being flexible helps theses organizations become more globalized. Formal organizations are often considered to be called conventional bureaucracy where there are few people in charge of many and the chain of command flows from the top to the bottom and the performance reports flow from the bottom to the top. With the way that Micah’s place of work is being run it won’t be long before the company has to switch up the way that they run their business otherwise they will begin to lose employees to companies that are more flexible. Flexible organizations have less people at the top such as CEO’s, presidents, executive’s, supervisors, and manager’s to answer to and work in a more team orientated environment with the same common goal of reaching the company’s desired business demands. Organization’s such as the one that Micah works for is based on a lot of rules and structure which is common for most businesses but as time changes so does the way rules and structure should be portrayed. Flexible organizations who are less concerned with the likes of higher command and more concerned with the ability to represent or cater to the customer are more likely to continue being successful. The way that formal organization are structured they will soon have to adjust to likes of the employees and consumers. It seems in Micah’s situation that if he had the skills and educational level to leave and go work for a company such as the one I work for he would. Even though you have to have skills and education to work for flexible organizations such as the one I for, your work input is not based on individual efforts but based on those as a group or team. Formal organizations base their work input on individual efforts so each part of the staff from the employees to the CEO have different roles which determine the performance of the organization.
