What is discrimination' Does it really exsist' I am implied to say yes. Discrimination is part of everyday life in America. There are many ways that an employer can discriminate against an employee. Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 protects individuals against employment discrimination on the basis of sex as well as race, color, national origin, and religion. Title VII applies to employers with 15 or more employees, including state and local governments. It also applies to employment agencies and to labor organizations, as well as to the federal government. (http://www.eeoc.gov/types/sex.html)
An employer needs to ensure it doesn’t violate the Civil Righs Act of 1964 as well as many other federal regulations. Since Patton-Fuller Hospital has more than 15 employees it must follow the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Based on this act the hospital needs to respect employees with different r beliefs, such as Muslim. The Muslim religion has a holy month of ramadan (rämädän´, răm´´[pic]dän´) , in Islam, the ninth month of the Muslim year, du ring which all Muslims must fast during the daylight hours. Indulgence of any sort is forbidden during the fast. There are only a few who are exempt, e.g., soldiers, the sick, and the young. Because of the purely lunar calendar, Ramadan falls in different seasons. The final day of Ramadan, Id al-Fitr, is celebrated by a day of feasting. This might require the employee to request time off, due to fatigue. The Hospital may want to ensure that the employee will be able to perform his or her job during the fasting time.
Sexual discrimination is a wide spread issue that plagues numerous areas of the private and public sector. Pregnancy is protected under the EEO and Civil Rights act. The Hospital may need to accommodate a pregnant person for her safety. However the hospital only has to offer her a reasonable accommodation.
Patton-Fuller Hospital is a community hospital serving the community. It has an obligatioin to follow policy and procedure set up by its board. It has a legal obligation to follow the law as relative to Equal Employment Opportunity, the Civil Righs Act of 1964, and other federal mandates. To ensure it is in compliance the hospital will need to employ and train the proper personnel. Having the proper personnel available to assist its managers and employees will help ensure compliance with law.
