SAFE SUPERVISION IN THE HOME BASED SETTING AND OFF SITE
In accordance with Early Years Foundation Statutory Guidance, it is your responsibility as a registered child minder that any child in your care is keep safe and secure, in the setting and off site.
Ensuring all areas accessible to children are safe and free from hazards,
At all times, maintaining sufficient staff to effectively supervise the children’s activities, and that Staff present are utilising effective supervision strategies.
Recognizing potential hazards and taking action to eliminate or control them
Reducing the likelihood of accidents and injuries through maintenance of a safe environment.
Constant Supervision is when you are watching the children at all time, it could be when they are using scissors or using glue.
Close Supervision is where you are not involved but are close enough to see what the child is doing and can step in at any moment if needed.
General Supervision is where you could be in a room where the child is taking a nap and you are generally supervising them.
When you are off site supervision is paramount. You need to have constant supervision of the children in your care.
Never leave a child unsupervised with any pets you might have. Make sure that all play equipment of outdoor toys have being wiped dry if it has being raining or children could injure themselves.
When off-site children’s safety is paramount, you should do a risk assessment before taking children any outing e.g. ensuring that all equipment and play area has been checked before allowing the children to play, ensure climbing equipment is sited on suitable soft landing surfaces with space around, all gates are locked to ensure that children cannot leave play area and removing potential hazards.
Road safety
When out with children in your care make sure that make sure you have the correct adult-child ratio, set a good example when crossing the road. You could talk to the children beforehand about road safety and maybe do some activities around road safety.
When taking children by car make sure all baby car seats and booster seats are fitted correctly and children are secured in correct.
CURRENT GUIDANCE ON HEALTH AND SAFTEY AND RISK ASSESSMENT OF THE HOME BASED WORK SETTING
An assessment of risk is careful examination of what, in your workplace, could cause harm to people. Carrying out a regular risk assessment enables you to weigh up whether sufficient precautions have been taken, or whether you should do more to prevent harm.
Keeping staff informed of any changes to Health and Safety legislation, policies or procedures.

* By making sure all staff have updated training on Health and Safety.
You should and put into practice a strict hygiene Policy which should include;
* Keep kitchen work surfaces clean, use disinfection to clean them regularly.
* Any spills should be mopped up immediately; separate mops should be assigned to different areas of the setting
* Any spills or accidents involving bodily waste must be mopped up using a bleach solution, and gloves must be worn
Food should be stored correctly, some require to be chilled so make sure you put them in the fridge straight away, ready to eat and raw food should be stored separately with raw food being stored at the bottom of the fridge, always cover ready to eat food, never use the same work surface or chopping board to prepare raw and ready to eat foods, ‘Use by’ this is about safety, do not serve found after this date.
Hand washing you should always wash your hands properly before preparing food or touching ready-to-eat food e.g. sandwiches, harmful bacteria can spread very easily from hands to food, work surfaces and equipment. Washing your hands at the right times helps to prevent this. You should was your hands after;
* Going to the toilet
* Emptying bins
* Cleaning
* Touching raw meat/poultry, eggs and unwashed vegetables
* Touching or changing a dressing
Pets, should be kept away from food, dishes and worktops, never wash children and pets’ dishes together, pets can spread harmful bacteria to children and food.
Waste disposal, you should always wear disposable gloves when handling any bodily waste. Different types of waste should be in separate covered bins in designed areas; soiled nappies, dressings, disposable towels and gloves should be placed in a sealed bag before being put in a plastic- lined covered bin.
