Blazing House
On December 6, 2006, I discovered that I had a house fire. It all started on Friday afternoon when I got home from school. Instead, of going home, I went up to the family business. So as my dad and I headed home to get tools to work on one of our rental homes. My dad is about five foot nine, with gray hair, wearing t-shirts all the time. I have notice that our curtains were missing. I told my dad “Someone has stolen our curtains.” As we pulled up into our drive way, my dad and I got out of the vehicle. He walked up to the door and opened it, while he realized the smoke and shut the door. When we pulled up to the house there was no sign of any smoke.
I tried to call the fire department on my cell phone and it would not go through. I was in a panic and rushed over to the neighbors. Fortunately, the neighbors were nice and they called the fire department for my family and I. I ran back over and the first responder pulls into the drive. He is short and round, wears a baseball hat all the time. He accessed the situation and called upon the rest of the fire units. The whole entire fire department was coming down the road. Along with the fire units, the town came along with them. The units arrived to my house and enter, to come to a small fire. My dad and I were standing outside and the fire department threw our air purifier out the front window as smoke rolled from the window. It was in a flaming ball of fire. Two other fire fighters put the smoldering air purifier out. Then next, our delicate family chair followed the purifier. It was also smoldering, as it came through the window.
The fire department was done with their work. It was late, so we went to my grandma’s house and slept there till morning. It was early Saturday morning and we all woke up around the same time. My dad realized that we had no clothes or any other morning essentials. A few minutes later, one of are good friends brought over tooth brushes, clothes, towels and blankets. The entire family meets us at the house later on that day. We all enter through the house with its chard furniture and walls. I could not salvage anything from my blacken, ash room. Out of the whole house, my family and I could not find anything salvageable. The following day, I did not do much because my mom and dad were on the phone with the insurance company.
Monday morning rolls around and as I started to head off to school, the phone rang and this person asked for mom. I woke my mom up and handed her the phone, the person on the phone was the fire chief. He told my mom that our house had rekindled like a ball of fire. We rushed over and the fire department was battling the blaze that covered the entire house. I didn’t go to school that day because I wanted to see what actually happen. The fire fighters were fighting the fire since three o’clock that morning. They were exhausted and tired like a little kids running around all day. We spoke with the fire chief and he said, “The fire chief called the fire marshal and he will be here in a couple hours”. As we waited for the marshal, we looked over what was left of our home.
By the way, the insurance company told us Sunday not to touch or remove anything. The rekindling caused us to lose even more than before. After the first fire, we could have saved the freezer full of food and the cabinets full of can food. A few hours went by and the fire marshal arrives. He and my dad were sitting in his vehicle for dreadfully long time. And I was sitting in my dad’s truck and then this big gusted of wind blew a piece of siding off and the fire rekindled again. A fire unit was called back out by the fire marshal and the entire inferno was finally out at last. I sat in my dad’s truck disappointed because I have lost precious belongings.
The fire marshal and my dad stepped out of the vehicle and walked over the smoldering house. The marshal, was kind of tall, a little round, and walked with a limp. He was showing my dad and me where the first fire happened. He explained how the fire started. My dad plugged in this three-way plug. The plug dropped down and created heat causing sparks. The sparks caused the fire by landing on the stuffed animals my dogs used as play toys. He went on explaining how the second fire happened. “The second fire happened in the attic,” he said. Then he points to this chard two by four that was blistered all the way around. And of course I said, “Yeah.” He goes on by saying, “That is where the second fire happened by the first fire causing a small flame in between the cracks in the ceiling. After all this we had to do a lot of paper work before we could even start our new home.
Even though, I have had a tragic event in my life. I have learned significance lessons and unforgettable memories. I can never forget the smell of smoke and all the hard work and freezing cold temperatures to search through everything. I thought to myself this would never end. It has been five years since the fire and I still have painful memories.
