Smoking The definition of smoking is “the inhalation and exhalation of the fumes of burning tobacco”. Cigarettes are made with finely shredded tobacco rolled in lightweight paper. It is the most popular method of smoking. In the United States, about 45 million people smoke around 480 billion cigarettes each year. Just the smoke from the average cigarette contains about 4,000 chemicals. All of this would explain all of the deaths and diseases that smoking causes. In the 1500’s, European explorers saw Native Americans smoking tobacco leaves from a pipe. The Europeans started growing tobacco plants and soon smoking became part of the European lifestyle. Most of the tobacco was used in pipes, cigars, or as snuff. It was not until the early 20th century when cigarettes became more popular. There are a few reasons why people smoke. At first when they are teenagers they might smoke because they think that they will be more cool if they do, but they are just fooling themselves. Others may start because of peer pressure; they might think that everyone else is doing it and that they will be a dork if they don’t smoke too.
