Introduction

It is known to us that competition among people in the 21st century is fiercer and fiercer and people have to perform better if they would like to stand out. Therefore the question that what can make people more successful in their career in the 21st century has been acknowledged by the great majority of employees. People will vary from one another as for the answers toward that question. As far as I am concerned, what makes people more successful in their career in the 21st century lies in the below three aspects: work ethic, professional identity and emotional intelligence.

What Makes People More Successful in Their Career in the 21st Century

Firstly, people who have intense work ethic can be more likely to succeed in their career in the 21st century. To put it more specifically, work ethic determines how a certain employee connects to occupational responsibilities like accountability, cooperation, dedication, determination, effort, goal-setting, reliability, task completion, timeliness, volunteerism and so on (Aaron Pack. 2016), which indicates that people who have stronger work ethic can complete a series of occupational responsibilities better. Stronger work ethic of the employees can be conducive to yield better performance due to their higher willingness to work for the company.

Moreover, the article published on National Institute for Professional Practice has claimed that professional identity can have impacts on how the employees will behave for their work (National Institute for Professional Practice. 2017). People who have constructed clear professional identity tend to perform better in their career in that they know how their profession will start, develop and end. That is to say, people can produce a sense of deference toward the profession they choose if they have formed clear professional identity.

Last but not the least comes that emotional intelligence is the key to both personal and professional success for people (Jessica Petor. 2017). Employees with higher emotional intelligence can be more competent in expressing and controlling their emotions and handling interpersonal relationships and they won’t let their emotions influence their work. At the same time, higher emotional intelligence can enable people to motivate themselves to work with passion, contributing to their splendid performance in the due time.

Conclusion

To sum up, a rational conclusion can be drawn that work ethic, professional identity and emotional intelligence can all be the assets for people to be more successful in their career in the 21st century. Thus the employees have to spare no efforts to cultivate those assets so as to benefit their career in the long run. Finally, the employees can welcome the success in their career.
