Introduction

In literature, symbolism has many forms, the most common one of which is using a specific object or image to represent another one or a more abstract one, thus giving that object or image a much more different meaning than the original.

As a figure of speech, in articles, essays, books and comics, many authors tend to rely on the technique of symbolism to build up a special emotion or to express a specific individual opinion. Perrine L demonstrates in Literature 1, "A literary symbol is something that means more than what it is. It is an object, a person, a situation, an action, or some other item that has a literal meaning in the story, but suggests or represents other meanings as well", which can help find and understand he technique of symbolism used in any forms of literature.

In addition, according to the research paper of Elaheh Fadaee, “The meaning of a literary symbol must be established and supported by the entire context of the story” and “The story itself must furnish a clue that a detail is to be taken symbolically. It means that symbolic phenomena can be identified by repetition, emphasis or position”, the symbols usually appear in the article or book many times so that the readers can easily find out and thus try to understand the meaning behind them.

In the case of V for Vendetta, the letter V is an obvious and significant symbol which appears a lot of times in the comic book. On one hand, V can represent victory which is a more apparent symbol of triumph of the protagonist. On the other hand, V can also symbolize a kind of spirit that can everyone can have and can be inherited generation by generation. The technique of symbolism in V for Vendetta is a major character of this comic book and by using this technique, Alan Moore attempted to convey a much more complicated idea and a much more abstract concept to the readers.

Structure of fantasy

The background of the birth V for Vendetta is a little bit complex. At the beginning of the 1980s, the anti-Thatcher riots happened in the nationwide of United Kingdom along with the potential and disturbing activity of the far-right National Front. Therefore, the failed attempt of the Catholic protester Guy Fawkes to blow up King James I of England on November 5 of 1605 when it was during the opening of Parliament of England began to be used as an undertone of those who were not satisfied with the current political situation.

To figure out the fantasy of V for Vendetta, it is necessary to understand what Alan Moore wants to deliver. First of all, it fights for freedom. When freedom is not challenged by other things, it is not that difficult, because most of us take this for granted, but while freedom is threatened by fascism which we could see in the comic book. Meanwhile, we have to struggle for our freedom no matter what it costs, eradicating the factors that will take it from us.

To demonstrate this idea, Alan Moore used “the last inch of you” to imply that we can be deprived of possessions, life or life of people we love, and other things but we can still keep up with the last things we have our own values and thoughts. Therefore, this “last inch of you” should never be given, because once we give up this last part of us, it can never be gotten forever.

Secondly, the individual growth of Evey Hammond is another idea that Alan Moore presented through the whole story. At the beginning, she is very scared and timid after being threatened, and she does not feel uncomfortable to live under the protect of V as a prisoner, even enjoying the splendid decorations in that beautiful prison.

However, this satisfying state makes her never want to confront with the outside world which is dangerous for her. In this way, to help her get rid of her fear, V tortures her and takes back everything she already has away from her. Only the thoughts and values of Evey are left. Thus, she learns to protect her own ideas and keep her las inch.

From these perspectives, V attacks the city, the people he hate and cruelly reveals the real fear of the prison it is already coming to make people choose to be imprisoned contently or be free in such a chaos. This is a part of fantasy in this book.

Another fantasy is concerned about moral uncertainty. Though it is obvious in the book that who are the good ones and who are the bad ones, there still exists ambiguity. V is a seemingly good person for he fights against the fascist government and tries his best to get freedom for the people. However, while he is fighting for freedom, he also takes away the lives of innocent people and faced with the guilty people who may want to remorse and reform, he still chooses to kill them instead of giving tolerance to them.

In addition, he imprisoned and tortured Evey both physically and mentally so as to lead her to think and see the things as he does without considering her own wishes. To some extent, it is another way of controlling. It is because his behaviors are set up in such a background that they are not taken as bad or evil.

Likewise, Norsefire are shown as evil side but they also have different degrees of confessing themselves. For example, the leader of the fascist government Susan, believing what he is doing is good for everyone although it is not so pleasant for them. Actually, the way Susan think is a bit similar with V, but V is taken for granted that he is in good side while Susan is in bad side. Another example is Eric Finch. He is an important official in the government and in the end he captures V and kills him because he thinks certainly it is right. He is not favor of fascism, either, and he also wants to do whatever he can to help improve the city and the governor of Britain.

In other words, Alan Moore intends to say that there is not only black and white in life, because most of people stand in the grey area between black and white. It is impossible to tell who is definitely good and who is absolutely evil. This is also a fantasy that Alan Moore constructed in this book.

Symbols

In the first place, the mask of V is a complex symbol. With the mask, the face of V cannot be seen, neither his real identity. His mask gives him a greater image, which makes him a bigger and stronger person. In this aspect, his real look and real identity are not that important, because with his mask he already symbolizes an abstract power in that city which helps eradicate the bad and evil ones.

In addition, dating to the origin of the design of the mask, it can also represent rebellion. The event of Guy Fawkes’ attempt to blow up the Parliament of Britain in 1606 begins to signify revolt and opposition against the current unsatisfying situation, so the mask is modeled after Guy Fawkes. Finally, it is also related with the individual growth of Evey for her last transformation into a greater person with the mask on her face.

As it has been mentioned in the Quicklet on V For Vendetta by Chris Muise, the meaning of letter V is also complicated. Besides the two meanings introduced, there are two more possible understanding of this letter. It can represent anarchy. V has a specific symbol which is a letter V within a circle, usually used by Alan Moore to deface the nature of the current authority along with the intentional defiant action of V. In the latter part of the book, there is a little girl shown this symbol marking on a wall when V finally makes compromise with Norsefire to control the constituents, which is a symbol of the people who are favor of anarchy.

The brilliant and amazing Shadow Gallery represents contentment. However, this kind of contentment has its positive and negative characteristics. On one hand, the Gallery has a lot of cultural treasures and even the most wonderful crafts in the world. V himself obviously seems to enjoy those marvelous music, theater, art and paintings, implying that the happiness of life can be stored in a specific place and exert good effect on lives. The negative point of the Gallery is that Evey appears to rely on this fantasy palace. Since she feels so happy and safe in that heaven, she does not want to leave there, let alone facing the danger and evil outside the place. It is her unwillingness to change that makes things worse.

It is shown in the book that real happiness and contentment should conquer the challenges appearing in the way to be a greater person first. With problems unsolved, real happiness and contentment can never realize. This is also referring to people’s ignorance to the chaotic political situation at the time. It seems that people are living a good life in that situation, but in fact, they could have a better one if they are brave enough to challenge it and change it.

Conclusion

In a word, this book is quite different from other comic books because it does not have super hero. Compared to other comic books, it is more realistic, especially in the terms of political issues and social issues. It could be said that the serious theme of V for Vendetta makes this book more formal. However, it does have its own fantasy by applying many symbols. V is a great person with great power; in this aspect, he can be seen as the “superhero”. Indeed, V for Vendetta has rich meanings in its themes and ideas. It is not just a comic book. For instance, V at last take his gloves off to make breakfast for Evey while still with his mask on to cover his scars and burns in the face, which shows a contrast and a contradiction. However, this should be seen as a breakout of V to open his mind and to change himself into a better man.

As it is described above, V, as a symbol, is used to be a complex image which is not absolutely good or definitely evil. In spite of all V has done for the freedom of the city and for the freedom of  its people, he can also be viewed  as a terrorist. He tried to destroy the governor of the fascist regime and did a lot of damage to the city regardless of the innocent people and their property. All in all, this character is designed to encourage readers to think personally that whether he is right or wrong, good or evil, which shows another way of having freedom. Readers are free to think personally and decide how a person V is.

V for Vendetta, though as a comic book intending to entertain readers, has its educational meaning than its recreational meaning. Through all these symbols mentioned above, Alan Moore tries to convey an idea that people should unite to fight against tyranny and fight for freedom. Actually, this book, along with its more political and serious theme, has great impact on the history of America. It did encourage Americans to gain strength and unite together to struggle for the rights that they were about to lose when it was under the rule of Bush government.

In a matter of fact, V for Vendetta had big influence on the way that people consider their real ability to transform the world into a better one or the one that they want. As well, it changed the position and the face of protesters against current authority. Nowadays, there are protesters who wear the mask originated from Guy Fawkes to fight against fascism.

Nevertheless, in contemporary world, people’s defense against such oppressions of fascist government tends to be more reasonable, unlike the approaches that V takes in the book. The way to fight for freedom and right is getting more humane, which is also contributed by the development of social networks instead of weapons and force.

In conclusion, V for vendetta is a nice comic book which can help understand the political situation at that time and also by learning about its influence on the real society, we can get a clearer idea of the Western political issues and argument, and these ideas are realized through the technique of symbolism with Alan Moore’s great fantasy.
