The Madam Bovary is one of Flauber’s most important novels published in 1856. This novel talks about the tragic story of Emma Bovary and reveals the evil and weakness of humanity. In this novel, Emma is always pursuing the seemingly luxuriant life and wonderful love affairs so as to escape the boring life with her husband, Mr. Bovary. However, during her pursuit of romantic love affairs, her inward thoughts are manipulated by the outer world, which finally cause her tragedy. In the novel, Bovary submits her all her feelings and soul to the outward vanity. She made her inward thoughts as the salve that yields to the material. She mistakenly regards kiss, hugs, sweet words as love. She mistakenly thinks money and material would bring happiness and love. Also, she mistakenly makes the parties and social communication with upper class as her pursuit of life. Finally, when all the outer vanity disappeared, she is disillusioned that she has not gain love or happiness. She is only the slave of her greedy desire and the illusion of self-deception. This essay would discuss how the inward thought of Emma Bovary is manipulated by the outer world.

First of all, the inward thoughts of Emma are manipulated by the material world. Such illusion may only the bursts of temporary happiness but would finally disappear and push her in the abyss of greed. In fact, as the victim of capitalism, Madam Bovary’s destruction is not only the tragedy of the individual, but also the tragedy of the society at that time. She is lured to the root of corruption and corrosion of capitalist society. The reason of her degeneration stems from the temptation and corrosion of the outward materials.

For example, after Madam Bovary commits suicide by taking poison, she knows that all the illusion and fantasy are destroyed. On the deathbed, “she slowly turned her face and seemed overcome with joy at the sudden sight of the violet stole, no doubt reexperiencing, in the midst of this extraordinary feeling of peace, the lost ecstasy of her first mystical yearnings, alongside the first visions of eternal beatitude. “(288) According to the inward thought before she died, we could know that she finally retrieves the internal peace and joy of mental state. When she is alive, she exhausted her ability to pursue the fallacious love affairs and fallacious material. However, her inner world does not experience the real happiness and peace. When she died, she finally realizes all her obsessions with the outward material are all in vain.

In fact, the environment of the society where Madam Bovary lives is in the corruption of public morals. Not only Madam Bovary, all the people around her are indulged in the voluptuous and luxurious life. For example, the Marquis that Madam Bovary has known is also a pretentious and hypocritical man. He has been the lover of Queen, killed the people he does not like, loved gambling, and robbed the women. Though he committed all manners of crimes, he still enjoyed the upper-class life with rich material. Moreover, Monsieur Homais, the pharmacist of the town, pretends to be the best friend of Charles Bovary. In order to earn more profit from the patient, he set Charles Bovary up by giving him the harmful medicine. Finally, he destroyed his best friend’s credit with his own hand but still pretends to be compassionate. They are all people around Madam Bovary. In such corrupted environment, Madam Bovary gradually falls to the deterioration.

Therefore, the tragedy of Madam Bovary results from the outward material world. Her inward thoughts are just manipulated by the corrupted environment.

Secondly, the inward thoughts of Emma are manipulated by the outer romantic appearance. Love is beautiful and everyone hopes that they could have a romantic and eternal love. In order to find the true love, some people put aside their dignity and moral standard but finally turn out to be the victim of love. Madam Bovary is actually the victim of love. She is dying to enjoy the fantastic love, but she only indulges herself in the outward romantic appearance. In her view, she regarded love as the handsome appearance, the fine-sounding words and the passionate kiss and sexuality. However, when she is disillusioned, she finds that her inner fantasy about love is only manipulated by the fraud of romantic appearance. When she is a little girl studying in the abbey, she regards love as the supremacy. After marrying Charles Bovary, she misconducts herself with several men. She gave all she had to maintain the love relationship and even borrows money from loan sharks. Unfortunately, all the men she had loved cheat her. They abandon her when she is poor and useless.

For example, when Madam Bovary falls in love with Rodolphe Boulanger, the man who seduces Emma to be her lover, she gradually loses her mind the romantic relationship with Boulanger. However, Boulanger is a cunning person. He reminds Madam Bovary to be careful when she comes to meet Boulanger. Since then, “little by little, these fears of Rodolphe’s took possession of her. Love had intoxicated her at first, and she had thought of nothing beyond it. But now that it was indispensable to her life, she was afraid of losing some part of it, or even of disturbing it. As she returning from his house, she would glance uneasily all around, observing every figure that passed on the horizon and every dormer in the village from which she could be seen. “(144) According to the inward thought of Madam Bovary, we could learn that her inner world is totally manipulated by the romantic appearance. Even though she learns that she is insane in this crazy love affair, she could not escape in this trap of love.

Therefore, inward thought of Emma about love is manipulated by the outward appearance of romance. She is trapped in the pitfall of men and her own fantasy of love.

Last, but not least. The inward thought of Emma is actually a vain fantasy of herself that is doomed to ruin. Madam Bovary is a pathetic woman. All her life was in the hands of others. For the author Flaubert, the theme of this novel is not the love stories of Madam Bovary. Actually, Flaubert focused on the process that Emma degenerates herself from a little simple-hearted girl to a depraved woman so as to reveal the corruption of society at that time. Emma was born in a peasant family in the provinces. Like many country girl, she is naturally a naive and clever girl. However, in the first half of nineteenth century, all the French people, regardless of the upper class or the middle class or no matter they live in Paris or other provinces, the girls should be sent to the abbey to accept specified education. Aimed at cultivating noble manners and behavior, such education would help girls to enter the upper class. Emma's father is a traditional French man. With eager to make her daughter enter the upper class, he sent Emma to the abbey. In the abbey, Emma receives the education require girls to be loyalty to their husband. However, as a passionate, romantic and sensitive girl, Emma rebels such conventional restriction. It is a hint in the novel which implies the tragedy of Madam Bovary.

For example, when she falls in love with Rodolphe Boulanger, “she recalled the heroines of the books she had read, and this lyrical host of adulterous women began to sing in her memory with sisterly voices that enchanted her. She herself was in some way becoming an actual part of those imaginings and was fulfilling the long daydream of her youth, by seeing herself as this type of amorous woman she had so envied.” (142) According to her inward thought, we could learn that the early education has influenced her a lot when she grows up. Her inward thought is manipulated by the story in the books which she had read. The plot in the books makes her become a woman full of fairy-tale fantasy about love, thinking that marriage can realize her wish. However, her own fantasy is finally ruined by the reality.

In conclusion, the story of Madam Bovary reveals the origin of tragedy in the nineteenth century of Paris. The outward material world and the false illusion of romance finally ruin a naïve girl. Actually, such tragedies happen all the time in the history and at present. Only by keeping the inner peace could we finally achieve the real happiness and joy.
