Crack Cocaine ranks among the best-sold drugs, though it has come into our visions for only no more than 30 years. Like all other drugs and intoxication materials, crack cocaine has caused great damage to the our society, bringing disastrous crimes and disturbing social issues to thousands of people, despite their age, sex, social status and other personal situation. Crack Cocaine has become a worldwide element of instability, particularly existed in the ghettos or favelas in mega cities of the world, and the under-developed countries and regions; the celebrities, particularly those in fields of entertainment, literature or other forms of art, are also closely linked to drug issues, mostly crack cocaine and its derivatives. This article aims to discover the factors that make crack cocaine so addictive to takers, its links with a series of social issues, and how is it affecting the world we are living in today.

Crack Cocaine is a kind of drug which can be easily manufactured by diluting original cocaine powder and boil to get the final product, which is a free-base form of cocaine hydrochloride (Anna M. Acee and Dorothy Smith, 1987: 614). According to Jeff Grogger and Michael Willis (2000: 522), crack cocaine was first spotted in the metropolitan areas of USA in early 1980s, and it only took very few years before it emerged as a critical role in the rise of crime rate in those areas. Crack, as a purified version of cocaine, can provide short, intense high and offers the taker a sense of superiority, power of exhilaration. These senses can last for five to seven minutes, according to data, which makes it extremely powerful in intoxicating and manipulating people’s mind and actions, thus bringing a rise to the crime rate. The survey made by Jeff Grogger and Michael Willis shows a very obvious rise in crime rate in 27 sample metropolitan areas after the crack was introduced in 1980s (2000: 523), despite burglary, which is an astonishing fact for those who concern about public security and police department.

The reasons behind the introduction of crack’s effect on crime rate are from two major aspects: the first one is what we have mentioned above, the strong manipulation and the sense of power produced by the crack itself; as well as the fact that takers can easily get addicted to drugs, whereas the drugs are extremely hard to get rid of. According to Anna M. Acee and Dorothy Smith (1987: 614), there are five stages after the users come down from high: worry about unable to get more crack, loss of appetite and energy, deep depression, difficult to sleep and the sense of revulsion. The crack would push its users into a deeper dependence, causing them to lose reason and do whatever they can to get more cracks, which includes stealing, assault or even murder. Those are very dangerous for the drug users and those who get in touch with them. Besides, the addiction of crack cocaine is hard to lose. Crack as a purified cocaine can provide longer high to users, as well as more damage to the users’ brain and neural system. The detoxification process is only the first step to make in terms of withdrawal—many drug users return to use out of being driven by former users and drug dealers. The withdrawal requires a comprehensive effort by the whole society, and it is really impossible to get rid of its influence once taken.

Another reason that goes with the crack’s part in the increase of crime is its manufacture and sales network—a black market filled with lucre and vendetta. It is illegal in almost everywhere in the world to produce crack cocaine and other drugs, so huge underground networks of crack manufacture and selling business are spreading fast in major cities of the world. The illegal drug business is highly lucrative, which have caused three forms of crime: the first form is that gangs and drug dealers murdering each other to get more black market share in a certain area, which is often presented as vendetta; the second category is the mass-production of cracks run by organized criminals, such as Brazilian favela militia and gangsters, which has been a major threat of Brazilian society; the last one, is the international trade and smuggling of drugs in the world. Drug dealers of America would use any means to transport drugs from South America to US, rendering the profit to rise 10 or more times than they originally were. Also, the drug advocates are keen on referring to law to protect what seem to be their “legal” rights. The Fourth Amendment of US Constitution, which is about the protection of people’s property, is often used by drug takers to justify their deeds (George J. Annas, 1989: 35).

After years of struggling between illegal drug users, dealers and police forces, cracks have not disappeared from public horizon, but getting stronger and influencing more people every day. The celebrities of entertainment circle are most frequently found by the public of smoking illegal drugs such as marijuana, crack and heroine. In the year of 2014, there are more than 10 celebrities in China that have been reported taking illegal drugs and being arrested by the Chinese police forces. The celebrities thus have left the audience very bad influence, especially the young audience who are unable to identify the right and wrong deeds of celebrities.

The legalization of drugs, including cocaine, has also become a heated topic in today’s world. In some countries, marijuana has already been treated as legal drugs, such as Netherlands; other countries, despite imposing restrictions onto marijuana and crack, cannot prevent doctors and patients getting crack cocaine for special treatment. It may be safe to use crack under certain circumstances, yet a drug might be given which would produce cocaine blockade (just as naltrexone does with heroin), but no such drug has yet been reliably identified (John Strang and Griffith Edwards, 1989:338). Some US crack and marijuana users would travel to Canada for “legal” drugs with a fake document, which is a ridiculous situation when both countries put effort in restricting illegal drugs.

The crack and drugs still affects our society from various aspects, especially in terms of their physical damage to users’ body and destruction of the society. There is still a long journey before people can get rid of them once and for all.
