Argument Refutation – School Uniforms

Argument Refutation

Introduction

School uniforms have been part of educational life for decades now. The reasons supporting and maintaining this custom are various and many known to the public. As Suzanne Moore states, the ideology behind making students wear school uniforms is that it maintains a sense of social unity among students. Besides, they ensure to avoid students dress provocatively. Also, it is a good way to establish discipline. Moore argues that no reasons are adequate to make students wear school uniforms, which may turn them into servile, conforming products of an industrialized society. Although making a valid point, she seems to be against the ethos of the educational system, not simply the norm of making school children wear uniforms. She believes that schools use uniforms to put a symbol on the students while they do not ensure a sense of unity among them. She is correct in stating that uniforms cannot achieve the ideologies they are aim. However, the original ideologies have nothing wrong. The problem is that these ideologies have already been sullied by educational authorities. This paper attempts to illustrate that school uniforms are necessary because the youth have to learn the importance of unity, exercise discipline—while expressing their opinions—and harmfulness of physical obsession in a society that is becoming excessively sexualized.

Argument

Indeed, Moore forms a valid contention, since we have seen that the ideas of social class divide and sexual promiscuity are still very common. School uniforms have little effect in increase discipline among students, because it is natural for teenagers to have sexual curiosity and the desire to rebel the adult society. As for social divide, actually this exists even among young children. Though the desegregation of school children was abolished in the United States after Brown v. Board of Education, as high school teacher Erin Gruwell showed, internal segregation was widespread in school children. However, Moore is incorrect in assuming that school uniforms are used to solve these social problems. The behavior of social divide and discrimination of children is influenced by adults around them. The blue eyes/brown eyes experiment by Jane Elliot can be recalled here (Bloom). However, there are adults who want to reduce social discrimination, but they cannot always affect every child. Thus, in order to bring up a generation without discrimination, the society should enforce some rules to emphasize such values. School uniforms are one of such rule. Taking about the sexual promiscuity problem, school uniforms can be of great importance. Since we cannot control the sexual curiosity of teenagers, right direction for them become necessary. Nowadays, teenagers are heavily influenced by the videos of some pop artists like Niki Minaj and Miley Cyrus, because they are living in a society which is becoming excessively sexualized and focus on physical beauty. Uniforms are a necessary measuring to remind the youth of the pitfalls of such obsessions.

Notably, Moore’s war against school uniforms is based on the idea that they enforce children to become conformists. She assumes that students wearing school uniforms is somewhat like MacDonald’s server wearing a work uniform. She does not provide any substantiation for such an assumption. Rather, her idea arises out of a fear psychology—while she is attempting protect something, the legitimacy of the threat she feels is not established (Gower 31). It is true that the capitalist society and the firms within it are working toward reducing individuality with their consumer behavior studies. However, this cannot be associated with the uniforms worn by school children. On the contrary, the clothes school children wear actually make them learn to be equals. In addition, schools are increasingly using uniforms to establish their superiority in the race among themselves. It seem to be very likely that they are using school uniforms and the students wearing them for this purpose. Thus, it is essential for schools to change their approach associated with school uniforms, but not necessarily ban them.

Conclusion

It can be concluded from the facts presented in this argument that Moore’s ideas of banning school uniforms because they will make students conformists are ill-founded. School uniforms are essential to advocate a sense of “uniformity” in a society that has been fighting discrimination for ages. If anything girls and boys should not be separated by skirts and shorts in their uniforms. Girls must have a choice of wearing skirts or shorts in their school uniforms. Having opinions does not have anything to do with wearing uniforms and students can wear uniforms and still become individuals with their own opinions.
