The Stanford Prison - StudyQuiet Rage

The video begins with a professor introducing the environment and instrument of a simulated prison to a group of students. What is the prison used for and what is the purpose of the experiment? Then the video records the experiment of quiet rage—the Stanford prison study. This video focuses on the behavior and psychological consequences of becoming prisoners and prison guard. Jail life and mental state of the prisoners and guards were recorded during the experiment. By studying the physical and mental behavior of the prisoners and guards, the professor finds the power situation affects people’s behavior very much.

I divided this video into five parts.

Part one is the brief introduction of the prison study.

Part two introduces the preparation before the prison study, including the environment and instrument of the prison and roles of the participants.

Part three shows physical and mental behaviors during the prison life of the prisoners and guards in detail.

Part four is the feelings and comments of the participants.

And the part five is the question and answer issues.

In the first part, professor Philip Zimbardo tells students the time, place, instruments and video clip about the prison study. We can see the environment of the simulated prison and learn the general thing about the experiment. But we don’t know why professor conducts this experiment.

In the second part, in order to study the behavior and psychological consequences of becoming a prisoner or a prison guard, Professor Philip conducts the prison experiment. He tells us how the simulated prison was built and how the participants were chosen before the experiment began. Besides, the prisoners and guards are selected and the rules they should obey are made. There are no psychological differences before the experiment started. The guard couldn’t hit the prisoners but could use psychological measures to make the prisoners feel controlled or frustrated.

In the third part, the prisoners and guards begin the jail life. It records the whole process of a prisoner was put into the simulated jail. The changes of behavior and psychological state of the prisoners during the prison are recorded. The relationship between the prisoners and guard are studied. We can see the prisoners suffered a lot and become anxious and angry. Different attitudes and ways of the guards treated to the prisoners cause the rage of the prisoner. Environment is promoted and other measures are made to manipulate the complaints from the parents. Different situations are made to observe the reaction and mental changes of the prisoners.

In the fourth part, Professor Philip explains the whole experiment. He tells us the different opinions between parents and prisoners about the prison life. The prisoners are suffered a lot but the parents don’t have the same feeling. The prisoners are telling the terrible experience and feelings after the experiment. But the guard don’t think his behavior are harmful to the prisoners because nobody tells him. The relationship in the reality has the relevance of prisoner and guard.

Through the video, we has already known the content of the experiment. By answering the question raised by the students, professor Philip tells the meaning of the study. The prison study can help promote the prison reform. It can also help study the effects on the behavior of people under different power situation and the limitations of giving up the freedom.
