Lyric Emotion

Lyric is the art of emotional expression, and emotion is the driving force of lyric creation. This kind of emotion is the logical development and manifestation of the human emotion, which produced within a cultural complex and the personality characteristic within certain context in certain time. Without a steady stream of emotion, there is no emergence of Song lyric as an artistic genre. Given the importance of emotion in Song lyric, it is to have a discussion of different techniques used to portray emotions in lyrics with a description and comparison of the emotions, or more specifically miss of hometown and relatives, expressed in “Dream of the Southland” by Huang-fu Song and , and Su Shi's "Song for the river tune".

In “Dream of the Southland” by Huang-fu Song, the poet poured his emotions in the scene and the images of the lyrics . At night, the room was dim when the lamp burned down and the color has become bleak. This was a lonely night, vaguely revealing the sadness of the people. So sincerely through the depiction of scene, his work thus revealed a sense of loss and even the pursuit of the spirit with the implied meaning of scenes.Through the vivid description of dream and twilight night, the emotions was all hidden behind the specific scene, despite that those natural scenes were related to the development of poet’s minds, mentality, and heart. There was only one direct depiction of the poet’s emotion: ‘Peacefully’ in “I peacefully dream of the Southland”. This lyrical pattern is to hide or omit the direct expression of feelings, but focuses on image themselves. It is similar to cast a stone in the lake, that formed a circle of endless ripples around the water. There can be a natural effect of emotions. Also, the banana flowers, rain, plume and other image revealed not only the identity of the owner's status, but also a kind of pursuit of plain beauty and aesthetic taste in the elegant way. In Song Court, there are some scholar officials, namely the Literati. The whole lyrics depicted the artificial scene on the indoor folding screen and the outdoor real natural picture of the southern China. The lyric is marked by novelty with both static and dynamic features. There was color such as painted ‘red banana flowers’ which ‘grow dark’.  Also there was sound such as the vivid sound of playing flute, human language, and night rain running down, that is, ranging from the visual image to the sense of hearing. This also reflects the aesthetic taste and artistic style of the upper scholarly class in the Song Dynasty. It is to express the true feelings and the richness of the inner spirit of a life, which makes it appear attractive. It is a gentle and natural style that precise grasps and perceives the poetic life and poet’s emotions. It is the grace of “Dream of the southland” .

Second, in “Dream of the Southland” by Huang-fu Song, through the contrast of scenes before and after the dream, it highlighted the profound emotions of the hometown. The lyric first was about the night view of the hotel, and then the dream. After depicting the bleak color and loneliness in sleep, it was to show a lonely night, and the sadness of the people. Then, the following lyric was about the description of dream. The last three sentences was all about the dream, but it was showing completely another scene: the south in the dream is marked by the clear and bright mood and tone with bright colors and excellent scenery as plum was pipe and people were seen speaking on the bridge under which spring water was blue. At this time, with the night rain and breeze, there was a boat in the south of the country, where melodious flute flowed. Here, there were affectionate colors, voices, and some people. This is a memorable and sweet night! However despite that dreams are so happy, sweet and intoxicating, it is unreal, but the reality is that night was so desolate, and lonely which contained the endless sadness. Through the contrast of dream of southern land, and the reality, the past and present contrast, Huang-fu Song’s affectionate and deep love for hometown and despair of current scenes are visible. This contrast makes the lyric filled with the words of the deep love towards hometown.

The expression of emotions through the scenes in an indirect manner is also obvious in "Song for the river tune" in Su Shi. In the magnificent scenery of nature, it is inevitable to be indulged in the beauty of nature. For example, the image of the moon in the Chinese literary tradition is linked together with home. In the nature, the scene of the moon is very romantic, which can inspire people's artistic association. A crescent moon will make people think of the raw sprout of things; a full moon will make people think of a good life of success; the   bright and clean moon will make people think of bright and upright personality. In the moon, there are a lot of human many beautiful ideals and vision. The moon is simply poetic. The repeated appearance of the image and word of the moon to some extent is the embodiment of Su Shi’s thoughts. At the night of Mid-Autumn, he was drunk, looking at the full moon symbolizing reunion. When it was reflected in the lyric, then it formed a kind of free and easy style. "Curving past the crimson towers , then lower past grillwork doors, and it shines upon the sleepless".  ‘Curving’ and ‘lower’ refer to the movement of the moon, suggesting that the night has been deep. Moonlight curved the red pavilion, lowered and shined through the carved doors and windows, leading to insomnia. "Sleepless" refers to those who can not have a reunion with their loved ones and feel sad, so that people can not sleep. This is a indirect blame for the moon which deliberately added sorrow, and implicitly expressed the sympathy for the unfortunate people.

At the same time, Su Shi's "Song for the river tune" also has a direct expression of his positive feelings.Su Shi was an exceptional ci writer viewed by his contemporaries as he did not write ci with a female persona. Su Shi had a very bold character, whose temperament was very romantic. On the beginning of the lyric arises a question: the moon is existing from what time - "how long has the moon been up there? I asked blue sky".  Su Shi asked blue sky as his friend, showing his bold character and extraordinary temper. He seemed to be in the retrospective of moon origin, and the origin of the universe; and also wanted to marvel at the clever beings, from which people can feel the poet's praise and longing for the moon directly. The next two sentences pushes the praise for the moon and longing for the situation to a higher level: from the birth of the moon it has been for many years now, and he does not know what the moon look likes in the evening. The poet imagined that it must be a good day, so the moon is so round, and so bright, and he would like to take a look. The emotion that Su Shi was very yearning for the moon and took it as his own destination is rather clear. Su Shi often borrowed content of mythology, and literature. From the thoughts of Su Shi, it can be seen that he was deeply influenced by Taoism, holding the attitude of life beyond secular matters. In the dialogue to explore the meaning of life and moon, it is full of interest, and fun, which is very intriguing. Its artistic conception is thus bold and broad with the feelings of optimism and broad-mindedness, with the desire for the moon with the ending wishes. “I wish that we continue long to share...its lovely grace”.  Thus, despite the negative meaning of the human nostalgia, the end of the lyric is marked by a higher level of change, to express his sincere wishes to all the relatives of the world, which is to increase the positive implication of the whole lyric.

“Dream of the Southland” by Huang-fu Song and Su Shi’s “Song for the river tune”  are two lyrics describing travelers' homesickness, which is a feeling that has an important position in the Tang and Song poetry and even the entire Chinese ancient literature. The lyric “Dream of the Southland” depicts it in a rather implicit manner with the contrast of excellent scene at home and loneliness during the travel. Although both poets poured emotions in the scene, there are sincere wishes and positive emotions expressed in "Song for the river tune" with a direct expression of his optimistic feelings.
