A Book Review of My Jim

In the book entitled My Jim, there is a lot description of small items in the daily life, which have huge and significant meaning to Sadie. Based on those small items, it can also reflect some unique features of slave family. In this book review, it is to have an evaluation of the most important item to him after a discussion of what significant meaning of those small items represent to Sadie and how they those meanings are formed and also a discussion of slave family .

Those small items have significant meaning to Sadie as they are witness and recorders of her past life, which helps her to remind beloved persons in the past. There is one commonness of those old items collected by Sadie: they are old objects which accompany Sadie for a long period of time. “I carries them things from a long time ago...from up Mississippi”, the narrator of My Jim, Sadie Watson, and also Jim's wife said (Rawles 2005, 18). Nostalgia is the instinctive attribute of human beings, although the memory is more and more, and people grow older, it is much easy for them to forget more and more the past things. It is true of Sadie Watson, a grandma who has reached her late age. Those are small things in the jar such as small knife, felt, bottom of clay bowls, or even children’s teeth and gold button(Rawles 2005, 18). Only those objects of the past can prove that she has experienced something at some time. These old items carry our beautiful memories of the past. With the passage of time, when she is touched by a scene, a discourse, a person, she will want to find reliance and seek these memories of the items as an elderly people now. Those old objects of Sadie will be a source of thought, leading to a lot of things of the past to talk about. The bowls with a Congo cross passed down from Sadie’s grandma stood for a magical power of healing(Rawles 2005, 101). Lizbeth got gold button from widow Douglas and liked it a lot (Rawles 2005,118). So these past objects are of great significance to her, as they are used to remember those past. In addition, those old objects and things are related to her beloved family members, either her husband or her children.  Thus, on the one hand, it can make her embrace a sense of security as when she often use things and hold children’s teeth or gold button in her hands, it lets her know that she also has a complete and vivid past in which she have witnessed her days of doctoring with the knife, and the joy of Lizbeth when gold button was given to her by widow Douglas. Among those small items of Sadie, I think that the gold button was the most important item for Sadie, although it was not functional and practical. Different from the small items such as knife, felt, bottom of clay bowls, which have a very practical use for the poor slave family, the gold button may be the only thing that can bring some aesthetic enjoyment to girls and women. “maybe the button a charm”(Rawles 2005, 118) Sadie once remarked.  And more importantly, it was regarded some precious things that boys can not touch. After getting this gold button , not only Lizbeth began to pray but also Sadie began to dream about Jim(Rawles 2005, 119). Thus, in some sense, it became a source of beauty and spiritual comfort .

As for slave family, it is defined as a loose bonds marked by lack of stability, an extreme poverty, unclear family members and lack of legalized marriage with the interference of external force---the white master owners . For Jim, his family is broken before his birth. When his mother still conceived him, his father had abandoned them, ending up being killed(Rawles 2005, 23). It just shows that how fragile the bonds between the couple are and how unstable the marriage system are. Jim is born in the graveyard where a lot of white oaks grow. There is no proper room and facility for the new born. Also, after his birth, there is no warm families waiting for him. There is a vivid description of his mother’s feeling about his birth. “he some kind of rag and she can find no use for him”(Rawles 2005, 25). This is a most surprising relationship between mother and son. The birth of a new baby of a slave family is not seen as a happy things as a new life appeared on earth, but is seen as a new property to suffer from miserable laboring. She had no joys but some practical consideration and worries. Also, his mother tried to cut herself with the knife(Rawles 2005, 25). The black parents in fact had no awareness of responsibility to their children and families. However, with the interference of eternal force---the white master owners, the families of Jim and Sadie  become much easier to break up. For example, when Jim’s mama just gives birth, her master had thought about to send her to the sugar cane plantation(Rawles 2005, 26). This speeds up the disintegration of the family much sooner.  In addition, the family member of Sadie are always unclear although her mother gave birth to a few children. “ I got a baby sister... only seen her once”(Rawles 2005, 26). It was because that the child was handed over some new masters. Also, she had no idea of who is his dad. But there are some rumors. “Mas Watson my daddy...he Jenny Daddy too” (Rawles 2005,27). Born as a slave, in childhood, Jim and Sadie lives in the edge of poverty and hard work, who help the owner to take care of the flock in a small age, they have to do a variety of milking, cleaning, laundry. By contrast, in the family of Mas Watson, he had wife and baby after marriage, and his baby, of the same age with Sadie “cant do nothing but play and sleep and eat”(Rawles 2005, 27).  Jim and Sadie worked so hard under poor environment,  but never received any reward and enjoyed a happy and free-care day for white children. More importantly, they never enjoyed some parental love and do not have a complete families.

To sum up, My Jim reflects lack of stability, an extreme poverty, unclear family members and lack of legalized marriage in the slave family. Thus, small items in the daily life have huge and significant meaning to Sadie will give Sadie a sense of security. The button is the most important one as it is indeed a religious savor and a spiritual pillar for Sadie and his family.
