In the book of “The short story by Jesus” is written by Amy Jim Levine. The view of the historical Jesus of Levine is that Jesus is “The lost son” who left the paradise of his heavenly father, went to dwell in the world of sin, engaged in a gentile mission indicated by his becoming a servant to a pig farmer. (Levine, 612)

And then returned home to be welcomed with ring and robe and feasting. (Levine, 612). The view of the historical Jesus of Levine is reasonable and confirmed.

Jesus insisted we should not judge, and that the criterion by which we judge others will be used to judge us. This is the best portrays of who Jesus was for that author.  Therefore he offered parables in which those who judge others are trapped into being in relationship with them; he told parables in which those who judge themselves righteous may be wrong or may not realize the full implications of their righteousness.

He constantly taught about laying up treasure in heaven rather than on earth, and so he told stories about rich men whose wealth does them no good and poor people who find the real treasure they need. At the same time, he taught people to love others and help others.(Levine, 613).

As for author, Jesus is the teacher of the human. He teach people to love others and be generous towards other people. And we should not mistreat our enemy. (Levine, 512) Jesus himself, as we know from the rest of the Gospel tradition and the Bible, cared deeply about reconciliation, and so he told stories about people torn apart and how they might be brought together.

Jesus knew that the best teaching concerning how to live, and live abundantly, comes not from spoon-fed data or an answer sheet. Instead, it comes from narratives that remind us of what we already know, but are resistant to recall. They are Jesus’ way of teaching , and they are remembered to this day not simply because they are in the Christian canon, but because they continue to provoke, challenge, and inspire. (Levine, 612-613).The author designed to create a feminist Jesus, that “cash is man, bread is female”, and so the father who has “bread enough to spare” is cost in the role of the mother. (Levine, 514) In the author’s view, Jesus is a great men and a real teacher.

There are many core traits of the Jesus of history, according to Levine. So let we talk about the main core traits of the Jesus of history. There are five main core traits of the Jesus of history in this book.

The first core trait is the parables.

The parable is an important thing in the book the short story of Jesus. Jesus told parables because they serve, as “song of songs Rabbah notes, as ask that can unlock the mysteries we face by helping us ask the right questions. (Levine, 613) The parables, if we take them seriously not as answer but as invitations, can continue to inform our lives, even as our lives continue to open up the parables new reading.

There are three parables in the first chapter. For Luke, the three parables are deigned to show the different concerns of two groups of people: those with whom the Gospel readers are to identify and those whom the readers are to reject.

And there are no “outcasts” in any of the three parables. The three parables are connected in numerous ways:by the theme of loss, and joy and feasting, as well as by structure.

In the first parable, the shepherd does not take responsibility for losing his sheep; in the second, the woman admits her faults; in the third, the father does not initially even realize that his elder son is lost, his desperate search then is not for the younger who himself went astray, but for the older, whom he had lost.

All in all, We can see from the book that the first two parables have happy ending; the third leaves us with father and older son in the filed. The challenge continue. (Levine,614).

For example, in the first story about the lost sheep, the parable presents a main figure-the owner, not the sheep-who realizes he has lost something of value to him. So the parable is one of the main core trait of the Jesus of history.

The second core trait is the stories.

There are many stories in the book, such as the lost of sheep, the lost of coin, the lost of son, the rich man and Lazarus and so on. The content of the book will not complete without these great stories.

For example, after we read the story of the lost sheep, we can see that the generosity of the Jesus. Stories throughout will make the content of the book livelier. It make each chapter of the book connected with each other. The stories are listed in order. We can easily find the title of the story in the contents.

The stories divided the history of the Jesus in to different parts. The plot of the story is mainly comes from the Bible and other relevant books. The true story will easily grasp the people’s attention. And good stories is good for the content of the book.

The third core trait is that: questions.

The questions would provoke from the majority of people in Jesus’ s audience the answer. And there are many questions in the book. For example, in the end of the story Lost sheep, there are many questions, such as will we take responsibility for the losing, and what efforts will we make to find it -or him or her again?

In the chapter two, some lawyer tests the Jesus, there are many conversation between Jesus and the lawyer. But the lawyers’ question itself is the fourth negative, such as “What must I do to inherit eternal life?”

Indeed, the question“ What must I do to inherit eternal life? ”, when asked by someone seeking to test , is similar to the other trick questions Jesus ‘s opponents pose.(Levine, 538) The trick question is a generic from that can not be answered yes or no.

The question presumes eternal life is a commodity to be inherited or purchased on the basis of a particular action rather than the gift freely given. The Jesus does not directly answer the question which the lawyer asked.

On the contrary, he uses what is sometimes called the “Socratic method” but which, Jew invented or at least perfected. In typical Jewish fashion, he answer a question with another question rather than directly answer the questions. By giving the question back on the lawyers, Jesus evades the trick. (Levine, 523-524) At the same time, the question will draw the reader’s attention to the article and make them be more interested in the content of the book itself.

The fourth core trait is the Luke, we can see the Luke all around the book. As for the book Luke, many parts of content in this book is coming from the book Luke. So it is a very important resources of the whole book.

As for Luke himself, Jesus’ context so neatly fit Luke’s agenda and how the other Gospels locate similar sayings in different contexts, it is just as likely that Luke has repackaged traditional material. Luke tells us the parables of the lost about repenting and forgiving. (Levine, 516) Luke tells us that the parable about the unjust judge and the importuning widow is about constant prayer.

Luke regarded the Jesus as “teacher”, which is differ from the meaning in current situation. For Luke’s narrative, calling Jesus teacher usually suggest that the interlocutor does not fully understand or respect who, for Luke, Jesus is really like this. So this character is very important in the book, because he is so nearly connected with the Jesus.

The fifth core trait is that the law.

The sinner is the one who “break the law ”, but the law becomes understood not in terms of “love your neighbor as yourself” or “leave the corners of your filed for the poor ”. (Levine, 612) On the contrary, it in terms of earning one’s way into heaven, legalism, or work-righteousness.

Many Christian readers, already primed to think of Law as the antithesis of grace and as a “burden”, come to identify with the “sinner” who is freed from this dreadful legalism.

The law refers to the Torah, and especially the Pentateuch, or simply the book of Moses exhorts.( Levine, 523) That is to say, you should choose the life by yourself so that you and your descendants may live, loving the load your god, obeying him, and holding fast to him, for that means life to you and length of days.

According to Jewish law, the lawyer is responsible for loving those like Jesus, and those who are not like him but who live in proximity to him although they are not part of his people, the children of Israel as he defined the term.

Leviticus does not explicitly require him to love his enemy who lives across the border, outside the boundaries of the state. In Jewish thought, people should not mistreat the enemy, but love was not mandated. Only Jesus insists on loving the enemy. (Levine, 531-533) In addiction, the law require that both men attend to the fellow in the ditch, whether alive or dead, for one is to love the neighbor and love the stranger both. Jewish law require that a dead body be treated with utmost respect. Law is a vital elements in the development of the story of Jesus. It provided a condition for the things between Jesus and the lawyers.

We have known the main core traits of the Jesus of history, according to Levine. So let we think the question that the Levine’ s view of Jesus is strong or weak?

As far as I am concerned, the author’s view of Jesus is so strong. The reasons are as followings.

Firstly, the author list a lot of the parables in the book short story of Jesus. Namely, the parables are lost sheep, lost coin and lost son. (Levine, 501) In the Lost sheep, Jesus makes efforts to save the lost sheep from destruction; In this story, Jesus really is a “Good shepherd”, and he is regarded as a generous person. The three parables are connected with each other. (Levine, 502-504) We might think about the three parables, each with main character(sheep, coin, son ) and something that is lost . (Levine, 502). These parables strongly support the authors’ s point of view. It makes the book reasonable.

Secondly, the author quotes the book the short story of the Jesus from the book  Luke to support his view of Jesus. We all know that the book Luke tells some detail things about the Jesus. So it is good to quote from it. The book Luke contains much to recommend it. For example, when the author tell about the story of the lost sheep, he may loo through the book Luke and find the useful information from it. The fair use of the cited sources in the writing is something that can not be ignored. ( Levine, 505-506).

Thirdly, there are many stories in the book. They make the content of the book become rich and vividly. When expounding one’s own idea we generally use little stories. Because do this is like talk with reader and it make the book better to read and better to understand.

Fourth, in the book, readers can find symmetry and comparison at every level, from the phrases in a sentence to the plot of the book. The author has easily grasped the level and theme of the book, set the tone and understand it. All of these make this book completed. The book is like next characteristics on writing style and stylistic rules and layout: the character is concise, straightaway, the key is outstanding, distinct. The layout of the book the short story of the Jesus is very reasonable. If we read the book by order, we will easily understand the author’s view of the history of the Jesus. Jesus is a real teacher in author’s heart, the author try to use the words which are easy to understand to write.

In conclusion, the book is very detail but at the same time, the words and the structure used are very simple and easy to read. Maybe different people have the different point of view towards the Jesus. We should learn something from the history of the Jesus, such as loving other people, giving the timely help to other people, and do not mistreat our enemy. Only in this way, can we live a real life.
