The report Avoiding Snacking Could Help Protect the Heart, Study Suggests cast eyes on the correlation between the heart health condition and the diet schedule and it reached a conclusion that “a strict mealtime schedule could protect the heart from age-related disease”. The study was based on an experiment with fruit flies as the experimental subject. By dividing the identical fruit flies into two groups and setting the mealtime as the only variable in the experiment, it showed that the group of fruit flies with a strict eating program turned out to be much healthier than their counterparts. Furthermore, co-author Satchidananda Panda, a circadian rhythms expert at the Salk Institute pointed out that “all together these results reinforce the idea that the daily eating pattern has a profound impact on both the body and the brain”. Then they applied this result to human health care and suggested that human beings should avoid eating too late and stop snacking at night. People will surly benefit a lot from a healthy diet habit.

 

This is a quite intriguing as well as confusing report about health care. On one hand, it has presented the readers an interesting experiment and naturally reached a conclusion, which was quite scientific and convincing. It showed a positive attitude that the ordinary consumers demand. What people want is not direct requirements from the authority or the media to tell them what they can do and what they cannot but some clear and available data and evidence from which they can make their own judgments by use their analysis and logic. This health report is a good example and may attract more attention. However, there is a very obvious problem in the report that it is really hard to define the correlation between the fruit flies experiment and people’s heart condition. In another word, how can the great leap be achieved from the fruit flies not gaining weight to human beings having better heart health as long as they can keep eating on time? The general readers cannot tell it is a problem with the report or one with the experiment itself. If the report could do more in this aspect, it will serve more people and be more professional than just being a normal health report. I sincerely hope this will not be of a demanding request.

 

As for the issue of balanced diet, it has been arousing more and more interest and curiosity in the contemporary world on a worldwide scale. Diet has been playing an important role in one person’s health condition and many aspects such as food choice, nutrition collocation and   mealtime are involved. Despite the awareness of having a meal on time, people more often than just are not able to adhere to the maxim. This is partially attributed to the fast-pace lifestyle. Most of the white-collars have to deal with a heap of work and working overtime is commonplace for them. Due to the endlessly prolonged duration of worktime, the period of time for meals has to be condensed and meanwhile delayed. This may account for some people’s forming the habit of eating a lot at night and incessantly eating snacks during their work. From this in-depth perspective, it is the modern social regime that should bear the blame for people’s irregular mealtime. From a micro angle, the family dietary environment also exerts a decisive and profound impact on shaping and forming one person’s diet habit. It can be easily imaged that a mother with abundant knowledge about diet and good skills in cooking, the rate of obesity of her child may probably be lower than those whose mother has paid little attention to diet and not cared about what to eat at all. In this way, if parents could lay more emphasis on their diet habit, seek for a balanced diet on their own initiative and make some positive change in family dietary environment, their child may benefit a lot from this. Nevertheless, it is not a change that could happen overnight. The diet structure sometimes is an underlying structure of a society which is controlled by many factors such as income condition, cultural tradition, social status and personal beliefs. Thus, this issue can never be simplified and generalized.

 

All in all, for the sake of individual health and well-being, it is imperative to be conscious with one’s own physical condition and strive for a regular meal as much as possible. After all, this can be a very trivial but also very significant issue in terms of individuals and a nation and a society.
