Breastfed Babies Earn More as Adults has reported a new study which reached a not very fresh conclusion that people who are breastfed during their infant period usually “have higher intelligence scores in adulthood and higher earnings”. This result was based on an experiment that tracked the development of 3500 newborns over 30years. Despite the establishment of the fact that the impressive effect of breastfeeding on brain development and child intelligence is widely accepted, the duration of the effect of breastfeeding, the correlation between women’s choice of breastfeeding and their socioeconomic status or educational level  is yet to determine. Someone explained the positive role that breastfeeding has played in child intelligence development that “the likely mechanism underlying the beneficial effects of breast milk on intelligence is the presence of long-chain saturated fatty acids (DHAs) found in breast milk, which are essential for brain development”. And in the end of the report, it showed the hope of more relevant study to unveil the secrets about “long-term effects and important life outcomes associated with breastfeeding”.

Now that much scientific evidence has discovered the helpful influence of breastfeeding on human intelligence development as well as on individual and societal level by improving educational attainment and earning ability, it is right time that we should call for women devoting to breastfeeding. However, there is a very interesting phenomenon told in the report that whether women choose to breastfeed their baby or not seems not directly related to their socioeconomic status or in another word, it may be influenced by a multiply of factors. In my opinion, firstly, it is concerned with personal attitude. It is quite evident that a confident woman with a positive attitude may be more inclined to breastfeed her child compared with the worried, gloomy, stressful and depressive counterpart. Secondly, educational background and socioeconomic status may be a two-edged variable. On the one hand, woman who has accepted more education and absorbed more information and knowledge about breastfeeding may be fond of this way of feeding one’s baby based on a clear understanding of the advantages of breastfeeding. However, if those educated women happed to be professional women, they have to face the dilemma of feeding their baby on their own or returning back to work as earlier as possible. A research conducted by Forste has presented that “when the socioeconomic status and birth background are fixed the racial difference may lead to diverse choices on breastfeeding”. In accordance with this research, compared with non-black women, black women may be less likely to breastfeed their babies in the United States. Besides, the social and domestic factors may also exert profound influence on this issue. For example, the marriage condition, how they give birth to their child, the duration of the delivery. The research mentioned above also showed that the rate of single mother’s breastfeeding is relatively lower than those with husbands. In addition, the attitude of family members and relatives, especially the husband’s attitude also play a vital part in this process, because women usually obtain such information about breastfeeding directly from people around them. Finally, it also depends on the knowledge, confidence and behaviors of the health care staff. A common case is that some woman has decided to breastfeed her baby before the delivery. However, some suggestions on feeding given by the health care persons that lack persuasion make the woman confused and helpless, and because of the terrible guide she may change her mind. From this angle, a group of professional and trained health care staff can provide women with persuasive and effective advice to encourage them to breastfeed their babies. In terms of the social factors, the publicity of the media, the enactment and implementation of pertinent laws and regulations as well as the establishment of the professional consultation of breastfeeding may indirectly affect the breastfeeding rate.

In conclusion, this report has once more delineated the strength of breastfeeding. Its influence on the intelligence development is unreplaceable because it not only is suitable for babies’ demand for nutrition, but also can protect babies from many kinds of diseases. Researches and studies on breastfeeding should be continued. Apart form this, it is a priority in the current stage to figure out the obstacles of breastfeeding in biological and social aspects of distinct geographical and cultural backgrounds and it is imperative to take action to overcome those obstacles.
