On the Valedictory Edict of Kangxi: His Final Thoughts, Worries and Emotions

The Qing Dynasty has always been regarded as a shameful time by many, due to what happened in the Opium Wars. However, looking further back in history, the Dynasty had also experienced unprecedented prosperity for ancient China. The valedictory edict of one of the most successful emperors of Qing Dynasty, or even the entire ancient history of China, Kangxi, has revealed the life stories and thoughts of the great emperor. It was written in an extremely humble tone and a conversational style. It is incredible that his words would make so much sense, even for a reader from today. The wisdom, concerns and emotions of the old emperor is completely revealed in the edict.

Kangxi was a true thinker, a man with long range visions and plans. Extensive experience of reading from a young age enabled him to think on a much larger timescale, and make inquiries of the constant historical principles. Being the emperor with the longest reign since the Ch'in Dynasty, Kangxi constantly wondered why and made reflections about himself. In his 57 years of reign, he had concluded the fundamental ways of ruling: being kind to men, cherishing talents, being considerate to officials, and acting as a father to the people. He believed that care and diligence, and the balance between leniency and strictness, between principle and expediency are the keys to being a great ruler. Being a critical reader, he didn't blindly agree with what was written, but constantly challenged the logics and established his own ideas. The reasons and motivations for such thinking were the sense of responsibility for the country and his heir.

In the final years of Kangxi's reign, China was a powerful and unified state, a top great power in the world. Yet he was worried that the peaceful state had made people lazy, and peace would be replaced by stagnation. He feared that such seemingly peace would bring down the country; when something happens, it would be too late to make changes, even if the ruler wanted, because the lack of fatality would have become a disease for the country. It is incredible that such worries came true by the end of the Qing Dynast, when the rulers decided to close the boarders and refused to embrace changes, which was exactly what Kangxi feared. Kangxi was also struggling with the heir problem in his late years. He was worried that instead of the best candidate for the welfare of the people, someone untrustworthy of the crown would be pushed forward for the gains of a few conspirators.

The edict, as mentioned above, was written with sincere words, almost making it feel like a personal conversation with the common people. In the edict the emperor expressed his emotions multiples times. He even mentioned about tearing up several times, which created a sensitive figure of Kangxi. Only a person of high EQ would be willing to reveal his vulnerable side to others. It is uncertain whether such sensitivity was originated from old age, but from the principle of him not wanting to take innocent lives from a young age, it can be concluded that Kangxi was an emperor full of compassion. When he mentioned about death, he was rather peaceful about it. He believed that everything was controlled by fate, his health, his successes in ruling, and his death. Overall, it was the love for the country and responsibility for the people and royalty that pushed Kangxi to invest his energy and strength for decades, into the most powerful empire in the world.
