Analysis of Be Cloude

这首诗是艾米莉·狄金森的名篇之一。在这首诗中,诗人描写了自然界中平凡的事物,如天、云、雪、风,它们都有烦恼。例如,雪不能决定是去还是留在谷仓或车辙,风总是抱怨别人的待遇。在艾米莉·狄金森看来,大自然并不总是庄严的,有时确实有各种烦人的事情,就像普通人一样。

The poem Be Clouded is among the famous ones of Emily Dickinson. In this poem, the poet describes ordinary things in nature, like the sky, cloud, snow and wind, and they all have troubles. For example, the snow cannot make a decision whether to go or stay at a barn or a rut, and the wind always complains about others’ treatment. In the view of Emily Dickinson, nature is not always solemn and sometimes does have a variety of annoying things, just like ordinary human beings.

In the poem, there is a cluster of words describing the things in nature, such as “low”, “mean”, “debates”, “narrow”, “complains” and so on. When reading these words, there is a picture of nature, which is quite different from the beautiful and sublime one that is traditionally kept in people’s heart, coming into our mind. The poet tries to tell readers that nature is not always so solemn that we cannot touch or get close to. Instead, she is just like an ordinary person and also has to make a decision or complaint, as we can see from the last sentence of the poem. These words draw a vivid picture of nature to readers, through which we can get the most straight and direct sense. Reading these words, we know that snow is not always free of bothering where to stay, for the decision is not easy to make. Through these words, we also know that wind is not forever wide and strong, for there is indeed something for it to complain about. When seeing such words, we naturally feel a kind of intimacy because we are alike. Then, the theme of the poem can be better achieved. Therefore, these words effectively provide a necessary premise and a channel towards the theme.

As to the tone of the poem, there exists a difference between the surface tone and the inner tone. It seems to be pessimistic at first sight since nature is not described as powerful and beautiful. When snow loses freedom and wind becomes weak, the picture in front of readers is gloomy and obscure, and nature loses her power and strength, which gives us a feeling of sadness and pessimism. However, the deeper tone lied in the poem does not seem to be so, but the opposite. In the second stanza, the poet says that nature is just like us and is not always with her diadem. From such words we know that nature sometimes also loses her sublime, and may have certain defects just like common people. In this way people and nature are quite alike. When we feel that nature is in fact not too to far to touch, and on the contrary, she is very close to us, a sense of comfort gradually rises in our heart. Therefore, even though this poem describes gloomy things in nature, the inner tone of the poem is optimistic but not pessimistic.

Besides, the use of personification increases the vividness of this poem. The snow is depicted as a traveler who is hesitating where to stay, and the wind is just like a complaining child who is unsatisfied with other’s treatment. Hesitation and complaint are quite common feelings of human beings, but the poet adds them to snow and wind in nature. Nature also has such feelings, and she may also hesitate or complain. The obvious advantage of personification is that the poet tends to tell us that nature and human beings are much alike and she is our close friend. We all know that people only show their pessimistic feelings like complaining in front of their intimate ones. And in the poem, nature is just showing her inner world to us, which greatly closes the distance between nature and people. We may strongly sense that nature, as a matter of fact, is not that difficult to contact. Therefore, the use of personification is a fine approach to let people feel and agree for the theme of the whole poem.

The poem Be Clouded is written in iambic tetrameter. There are eight syllables in one line, making up four feet. And in each foot, there are two syllables, one unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable. It is a commonly used form in English poems. In this poem, iambic tetrameter allows each line of the poem to be written within a certain length that is neither too long nor too short. When reading the poem, this form makes us read through one line within one breath, which is comfortable and rhythmic. In addition, iamb provides a feeling of rise and fall, which is just like the flying of snow and the blow of wind. What’s more, the inner feeling of making a decision and complaining of snow and wind is also presented through rhythm. In this way, the content and theme of this poem is more fully shown to readers. Furthermore, four feet contained in one line do not make the lines long, thus relatively simpler to read and understand. However, this poem is not in strict iambic tetrameter. The last line of the first stanza and the second and the last lines of the second stanza are variations. The slight change of rhythm increases flexibility of the poem and avoids rigidness.

The poem Be Clouded describes a different image of nature and gives readers a new understanding of nature. Through the careful use of words, tone, figure of speech and form, the poet successfully creates a new appearance of nature as a close friend, which is not always solemn and mighty but has some defects as well, just like ordinary human beings.
