Introduction

According to UST Today, IHG is expanding its hotel toiletry recycling program. The program, run by Clean the World, aims to recycle hotel guests’ soaps and enhance sustainability in the hotel industry. I agree that IHG should adopt and promote this initiative for sustainability. There are four main benefits of adopting this new hotel-soap recycling program. However, negatives also exist with the promotion of the program. IHG should take into consideration potential risks with the soap recycling process and develop systematic processes to further develop the program in the future.

 

Positive and negatives with the initiative for sustainability

First, by recycling the unused soaps left by hotel guests, the participating hotels could save a lot of resources and use it for more people around the world. Maury Zimring, a corporate responsibility executive at IHG, states that there was a total of 148 hotels across IHG's chains that have joined the recycling program, including InterContinental, Crowne Plaza, and Holiday Inn. With 99,000 pounds of soap being recycled, the hotels have successfully translated the unused resources into 400,000 bars of soap delivered to thousands of people in developing countries (Delollis, 2013). If this initiative could be further promoted and adopted by more hotels, more soaps can be recycled and this in turn could produce more new soaps, which can be used by more people.

Second, by promoting this initiative for sustainability, IHG could save lives around the world. A CNN report states that hundreds of thousands of children living in rural areas are vulnerable to disease and health problems because they don’t have soaps to wash their hands (Dunn, 2017). According to Unicef, diarrheal diseases alone lead to one in five deaths of children in Cambodia, and this is largely due to the lack of access to hygiene practices. By promoting this initiative of hotel toiletry recycling program, IHG could actually send the recycled soaps to those children in poor areas in need to save thousands of lives. The fund they would be able to collect could be also used to establish another education and training program that aims to educate children in rural area to pay attention to hygiene practices in order to protect them from future disease and health risks. By developing corresponding sustainability practices, the corporation could further contribute to the protection of global environment and enhancement of health and well-being across the globe.

Third, the recycling program would benefit the hotel itself from not only its long-term profit perspective but also from positive brand image and public relation perspectives as well. By taking this initiative in promoting this soap recycling program, the hotel would improve its brand image as a socially responsible corporation which positively contributes to the global environment. It will enhance the loyalty of its existing customers and attract new customers, thus improving its profits in the long-term.

Last but not least, this initiative in sustainability set a model and a socially responsible trend for the overall hotel industry. As the program gains more awareness and positive feedback from the public, more hotels would pay attention to this initiative and will follow this trend to incorporate sustainability practices in their business models. By fostering a positive and sustainability-focused environment in the hotel industry, IHG contributes to the development of the whole industry as well.

The negatives that may brought by this initiative is the potential safety risk. If the soap is not properly processed and brings bacteria to future users, this would be a huge problem for the health and safety for a lot of people. Thus, whether the recycled soaps can be properly handled and re-manufactured is an important task in the recycling process. Furthermore, the recycling process, to some extent, relies a lot on housekeepers, as stated by the CEO of Clean the World, Shawn Seipler. It is up to their intentions to do this extra task of locating the used soaps and placing them in the recycle bins (Delollis, 2013). Thus, it is important to educate the housekeepers about the importance of this program and the sustainability values in the corporation. Only by incorporating the vision of sustainability into the daily hotel operations and the mind of every hotel employees can IHG fully take advantage of the program and yield the greatest amount of benefits.

In a broader sense, as the scope of this program becomes bigger, this initiative contributes to the protection of the planet and the environment for all human beings. The corporation should not only focus on the positive sides, but also consider the potential negatives of the program and develop potential solutions to solve health related risks. This includes the improvement in recycling technology and processes as well as enhancement of the management of the overall recycling process, including housekeeping training, customer recycling education, soap manufacturing and distribution.

 

 

Effect on the budgeting of the hotels that participate in this initiative

The hotels participating in the recycling program will pay 65 cents per room every month for the service ((Delollis, 2012). However, the costs with the service will be offset by savings on the reductions in cost related to trash and waste as well as the profits they generated from the positive PR they get as a result from this program. As a result, with the promotion and development of this initiative, the hotel will be able to improve its budgeting and thus invest in more socially responsible business activities.

 

Promotion of the new form of re-cycling to hotel guests

IHG wants customers to know how the soaps they leave behind could be and will be recycled in an environmentally friendly way that benefits people around the globe. As the program shows the company’s corporate social responsibility and its commitment to improving sustainability in the hotel industry, the company should promote this new form of re-cycling through a variety of marketing channels, including both online and offline efforts. Online promotion should focus on transparent reporting on the ongoing process of the hotel toiletry recycling program. Key reporting procedures, goals, and metrics should be clearly defined and management as well as tracking of data should be communicated to stakeholders at the same time (Adams and McNicholas, 2007).
